Bettering the Intake

Recommended Posts

Well I'm working on my intake, just finished the custom ram air job, and now I'm trying to block off the lower resonation chamber. I thought about putting duct tape on the inside to cover the hole, but decided that was a really bad idea as the tape could un-stick itself under the pressure going by and get sucked into my engine...

I thought about cutting it off but I'd rather not do something so... irreverseable, but then again I don't have any other ideas. Has anybody done this? Does anybody have an idea on how I could do this? Do you know if it would make my engine sound any different?

Leme know what you guys think, I can get some pictures of the ram air job I did, and of the resonation chamber if you don't know what I'm talking about...

Thanks

By all means take some pics of it and post them.  I helped a buddy of mine do a custom setup on his 95 Grand Prix.  It consisted of a K&N Type cone filter and we ended up using duct tape to cover his resonation chamber.  To make sure that it didn't cause any problems we put the tape all the way around instead of just a small piece.  Then we covered it in electrical tape to make it look nicer.  But, another idea would be to go to a plumbing supply store and find some type of cap that fits over it like a PVC or a CleanOut cap.  Working w/ plumbing stuff for years you shouldn't have a problem finding somthing that works nicely.  And you can just hold it on w/ a hose clamp.

Let me know how it turns out.

You can take a peice of flat flexible plastic and epoxy it over the hole on the out side. And since it hangs from the bottom, you won't even notice it, but it's better than tape. That is what I thought of doing, but I got a good deal on a K&N FIPK.

Okay, I finished the resonation chamber last night, found some good strong aluminum tape to put on the inside blocking off the hole. I didn't feel any difference in power, but I don't really have any specific way to test it to be sure (my nifty new Gtech comes in a week or so, that should be fun to play with). Anyway I'll get some pictures up in the next couple days or so, maybe I'll even get bored enough to write a howto for both - though neither operations are really that hard...

Just thought I'd add...

chevy4x4trucks mentioned using PVC. Don't. At high temps, PVC will warp, and possibly melt. This is not only bad in and of itself, but it can release very toxic fumes. (If my chemistry is correct, Polyvinylchloride releases Chlorine gas when oxidized) I had thought of using PVC, but when I checked out its tolerances, I found it doesn't handle high temps well at all.

I know some people have fabbed CAIs out of PVC, but to me it's not worth the risk.

Use ABS plastic. I used ABS on the CAI I made for my S10 and it hasn't given me any trouble.

Disclaimer: I never was able to find the tolerance specs for the ABS I used. Though I'm sure that if it did melt / warp I would be in no danger from fumes, I can't say that it wouldn't hurt your truck.

PS. Sorry for the novel
