jhm Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 Well, just about to hit 50K and I can say my '01 4.8l 4x4 ext cab has had no problems. I had a mysterious coolant drip about a year ago, would just appear on the garage floor randomly. That has stopped but I will have it checked before the ext warrany expires. Hope the next 50 are as good!
OUMike Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 Congrats. I'm about 1700 miles away from 200,000 myself and I'm basically problem free. Other than general upkeep and belt driven parts its been smooth sailing. I look forward to seeing some of the other high mileage trucks in Dallas, TX in Sept.
Dyabolical Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 My '97 just recently topped 210k, buuuuut...i myself have only put about 4k on it. Just purchased it a couple months ago. The truck runs great, even considering that the mechanical upkeep was poor. But all things considered the truck is a beast compared to other makes/models with the same upkeep history.
jhm Posted June 1, 2006 Author Posted June 1, 2006 Wow 200,000 miles with just routine stuff, that's great! I wanted to post my mileage because it is good to hear about our trucks that are running great with routine maintenance. I know I am a lot happier with my truck than I was with my old dodge. I practically had a reserved seat in the service waiting room!
RyanZ71 Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 Your problems won't start till about 80,000 miles. Trust me, it'll happen. Hopefully it'll just be the little stuff like alternator going out, bulbs buring out in the radio, and such instead of the major common problems like fuel sender, slip yoke (I think yours is new enough that you have the updated yoke) G80 going out, steering shaft being very clunky... Till then, enjoy a troublefree truck!!!

I'm just pleased that so far problems have been minimal. Actually they did replace the alternator at around 25K. I noticed the voltmeter was staying high. By the time the radio starts acting up I will probably want something better anyway, maybe Sirius. My truck dosent have the G80. Steering shaft lube kit was put in under the standard warranty. It wasn't a problem, but I told them I wanted it done before my warranty ran out. They agreed it was a smart thing to do. Decent service guys where I bought this truck.
ChevyTech007 Posted June 3, 2006 Posted June 3, 2006 Intermittent water pump leaks are most common on you vehicle.
snoman Posted June 3, 2006 Posted June 3, 2006 In 176k miles my 89 4x4 burb has had the rear bearing in altenator replaced at about 115k, a new water pump at about 125K, a new TBI to intake gasket at about 135K and a new muffler at about 140K and just normal maintaince otherwise. Been a very good vehicle that I bought new. ( oh yeah, I did rebuid auto lockout hubs about 4 years ago and replaced the outer shaft bearing in one, not wheel bearings, and installed new seals. It is still pretty cherry and I have no plans for its retirement. It is not our daily driver though as we mostly use it for trips these days where its 40 gallon tank and good MPG (about 18 on highway) plays well. Painfull to fill up though when you need 30 gallons or more though.
RyanZ71 Posted June 3, 2006 Posted June 3, 2006 The water pump is starting to go on my truck as well, started out with a small leak but its getting bigger over time. Since I got my truck at 70,000 miles, I estimate I've spent around $4000 in maintenance, repairs and upkeep in the past 30,000 miles. I think once you get over the 120,000 mile mark your good again till around 170,000-180,000 miles, if the tranny doesn't go out between then.
