Will I improve gas with....

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to find ways to get more MPG. Here is what I have, but have not installed it yet. I want to see what else you guys suggest. So far, cold air intake, magna muffler, electric fan. Is there any other mods I can do to get better gas milage. Im getting at least 16-17 MPG. now with out any mods. However I did install new ACdelco platniums, a mont ago.

Thanks for your help in advance!

Wait.

Why do you want to increase your mpg?

Thats a serious question by the way.

Why would you not want better mpg?

For LINCHPIN, you can get a tune from Nelson Performance or Wait4me performance that will give you an increase.

Get a tune, ditch the cold air intake (causes PCM to richen up mixture) unless you live in the southern most states, drive slower keep hi way speeds down to so tach is no higher than 2000 rpm,s, remove the cross bars on your roof rack.

The point I was trying to make was, you increase your mpg because you want to save money. Well if you are having to spend 600 bucks to increase you mpg by 1 or maybe 2, then it will take a really long time to pay that off. When you could of just spent that on gas.

It's like some idiot I knew that liked to drive to 30 miles across town because the gas there was 2 to 3 cents cheaper. Why drive 60 miles to save 60 cents.

Oh and I'm not trying to refer you as an idiot also. Sorry, if it came out that way.

 , Mark its just right now, I have extra cash and would like to this now that I have it. In the near, future It may help in a long run. When gas may go higher, and am a little tight on the cash. And hope that it will put less stress on my motor.

As far as mechanical upgrades go, there really isn't anything you can do to give you noticable improvments in MPG. Some calim that the chips/tunes (same thing in my book) may help but from those I've talked to in person, they never noticed much if any of an improvement in MPG. Performance yes, MPG no.

I gotcha. It's just that there have been people on here who have been spending money left and right to increase their MPG. I just didn't want you to go out and spend dough that could of been spent other wise.

Now of course if you wanting to spend cash on go fast goodies then by all means go ahead.

But the best thing for mpg would be a custom tune, tires with good amount of air pressure, synthetic oil, and try not to ever go over 2000 rpm when driving in the city.

This is one the correct page, a different filter is more a state of mind than anything and dual CAT backs will reduce city and urban MPG because they will actually reduce lower RPM efficency and responce. A modern engine is pretty well tuned from intake to exhaust as they ship and if it was that easy to increase MPG detriot would do it because they have to maintain highest possible fleet average. Go good tips, use smooth treaded stock type tires with no lift and use at least "C" range tires at 50PSI to reduce rolling resistance. Change all fluid (engine, axles and Tcase regualrly as it all adds up. How you drive it a factor too and use better than 87 octane fuel if you want best possible MPG (Detriot always use it in EPA MPG tests) as it will allow for ECM to retard spark less and boost efficentcy on output. Myself I never use 87 in any of my vehicles be it 4cyl or V8 and even my wifes 2000 Cherokee with a 4cyl runs better with 89 or better as I can tell by driving it when she slips in a tank of 87.

Snoman,

Would changing out the stock muffler with something more agressive also retard low end performance? I'm talking just cut out and replacement only.

As long as it is not a straight through muffler (it has baffles like a Flow Master or the like) to produce a little back pressure it will not hurt. A large single with a 3 inch tail pipe tend to play well because it does flow well but provide a little bit of back pressure and balances the engine banks. I have run a simular setup on my 89 burb for years (3 inch in/out single with a flowmater) and it has played well and it get good MPG for a big old burb abd no loss of low RPM responce either.

I have gotten around 18 mpg on the 01 silverado, it has a magnaflow muffler and k&N intake, the muffler I only did a cut-out and replace. The biggest difference I think was the tune from Wait4me. I also get 18 on the 04 pickup and I did the same mods as the 01 but did a airaid intake system. The airaid intake is quieter than the k&n.

I would like to see you fill tank and then burn about 75% of it before you refill and get 18MPG. When I make a MPG claim on my old 4x4 burb, it is after running 450 miles or more between fill ups on a trip (I have gone about 600 miles a few times as it has a 40 gallon tank)

You do not want the exhaust pressure to blow down too quickly in cyclder at lower RPM as it will reduce lower RPM power and economy hense why it will do better with a little bit of back pressure. The little bit of back pressure will also reduce the savanging of unburnt fuel during valve overlap into exhaust system and more or less wasting it.

The only upgrade I've ever done that got me one ounce of better mileage, would be the tune.

CAI kits, catback exhausts, etc...Have never gained me one useable HP. NOT ONE. They've also never gained me one single mpg, ever.

Not even on my butt-dyno.

I'm getting one MPG better in town, and about 2 better MPG on the highway since I got my tune in this truck.

The absolute best way for better MPG? Pretend there's an egg between your foot and the gas pedal and don't break about 65MPH on the highway.

Tonneau covers are a proven 1.5MPG gain due to reduced drag. For under $300 it is a pretty fast payback.

I am testing a wait4me econo tune and on 87 gained 0.6mpg. The claim is higher octane will result in even more gain. It does not take much MPG gain to justify buying higher octane gas so I am hopeful that my results are going to be better with 93.
