Chips, Tunes, PCM's ect...??

Recommended Posts

Well it is time that i start looking into the next mod for my truck and so i want to do some basic research on it. I have decided that it will be some kind of computer tune. I do not understand the difference between a chip and a tune (such as westers)....are they the same thing? I believe that both either replace or alter the PCM factory settings. Is this correct?

Now that i have the basic questions out of the way...I am going to get to the nitty gritty stuff. What do you guys reccomend for my truck (see below) if i am looking for a preformance tune/chip for 87/89 octane?

Also my buddy is going to do the same thing and he has a 2004 2500 with the 6.0l what should he get?

Thanks guys!

Check out a wait4me tune (http://wait4meperformance.com).

I had Jessie tune my 2002 YukonXL for 89octane.

At first, I wasn't sure if it was any different. However, after driving it for a bit, I'm getting better gas mileage and it difinitely has better performance.

My brother-in-law took my truck the other night for a run. I wan't his opinion on it's performance. He was absolutely amazed how it out performed his 2006 Silverado.

For the price that Jessie charges, it can't be beat! :)

Ok...but uh....what exactly does the tune do? and how much better gas mileage? :D

I went from 13-14 mpg to 18-19 mpg (city and highway mix). Also, I can punch it at 30 mph and leave black marks and at 60 throw you back in the seat pretty good.

WOW...well if one of these wait for me tunes that jessie does really helps this much count me in on getting one. I really want some more details from you guys though on it. I know nothing about computers in these trucks. I know the engines and stuff pretty well, but i get lossed in the computers.

Anyways...Where is the PCM? Do you order a new "tuned" one from Jessie that has been given the wait for me tune and replace the stock one with it? How much do they cost? EXACTLY which one do i get and how do i order...and talk to jessie?

Make that 6! Only saw the MPG gain with 93 Octane. Went from 16.5 to 19.5 and have yet to drop below 19.1MPG and that is all city driving number. I expect more from highway miles.

Ordered a second one for the Wife's tahoe.

You will not be sorry!

I can't believe a 4WD 5.3L is getting nearly 20MPG in the city.

I am saving $8 per fill-up even using the 93 octane at 20 cents more per gallon so the tune pays for itself in under a year.

Don't know but I kept the spare pcm just so I could plug it in for the dealer visits. Also provides a good diagnostic to ensure the tune is not causing the problem.

Nothing in life is free - what is the downside to a tune? will it shorten engine life?

I have heard that some tuners will set the speedo to be off so that it looks like you are getting better MPG when in reality no.

Man, thats good milage. Our truck gets 21-23 mpg driving city. A little less in highway...then again, It better get good milage for what it is. :) Why spend money on a tuner? you can jus tbuy a hybrid! :D
