Think your gas mileage is bad?

We took a trip to Georgia for about 5 days. It's around 500 miles each way.

 

I have the 6.0, with a Nelson's dual tune 89/93 100% TM removed and everything else wide open. My travel speeds through Georgia were between 65-70mph. Florida was between 70-75mph.

 

It took 5 FULL tanks to get there. Nearly $300. NO biggie. If I wanted gas mileage I would have gotten a car. Granted it's all uphill as well. Elevation on the GPS showed we started @ 100ft + sealevel, we ended at nearly 1500 + sealevel.

 

The way back only took 2.5 tanks of gas on the way back. This time I calculated my gas mileage with the tire correction added in.

 

*IF* my math is right -- The 285/75 16's are 7.782% larger than the stock 245's.

 

Fuel up #1: GA

Speedo said 124.1 miles, I calculated 133.7 actual miles.

I put in 7.41 gallons in, That equals roughly 18???? How is this??

 

Fuel #2 GA

Speedo said 202.9 miles, subtract 124.1 for actual mileage of 78.8, which goes to 84.9 true miles.

I put in 6.15 gallons, that comes out to 13.8 mpg???? hmm.....

 

Fuel #3-- Full tank from Tifton GA to Dade City, Fl

speedo said 446.1 total, subtract 202.9 and driven miles is 243.20, which goes to 262.12 actual miles

I put in 20.58 gallons, that comes to 12.7. ??

 

 

13-12mpg on the highway with rpm's less than 2300, unloaded, etc. That's crazy I usually get that in the city driving. There was no fast hard accel, etc. Anyone else want to chime in?

Where are you filling up 5 times and only spending $300? That doesn't seem possible unless you work at Exxon. That works out to about $2.31 a gallon. Around here it's $2.90 and up.

Prices averaged from as low as the 2.30's -- to close to 3.25. IT all depended on where we were. Lower income areas we passed through had the lowest prices. If I had the reciepts which I should have kept so I could figure my gas mileage.

 

 

I know from looking @ the checkbook we stopped quite a bit more for fuel than on the way back.

I rented a Ford F150 this week (I need to move some stuff) and drove down here (I'm in Houston right now), and it got between 17 and 18 mpg, keeping the speed under 75 the entire time.

 

It's also a gutless pig.

I drive from Denver to central Utah about 5 or 6 times a year on I-70 over the rockies. a distance of about 500 miles and it seems no matter what I try I always get the same mileage. It's always about 12 mpg.

When I used to make the same trip in my 90' half ton with same amount of tools and it still had stock tires I would get about 14 or 15 mpg.

I know this truck wieghs much more and the taller tires,Ranch Hand,shell all add up to even more. But the comfort that I gained is worth the mileage penalty. More mileage would be nice but I bought this truck to haul and I'm not unhappy with it.

I used to drive from central Fla to western Ky a few years ago, I averaged about 10-11.5 @ around 70 mph, I got better milage, about 12-13 driving about 80 mph.

You are going to hate me then...Last three tanks I've gotten over 11 MPG in the city. I am BIG BLOCK, hear me ROAR!

I'd consider that your mileage culprit is in your axle (those 4.10 gears). They are great for towing, and in the city, but you're just wasting gas at 60+ on the highway. :/

 

Thats where a second overdrive gear would come in real handy.
