Difference in the more powerful Duramax?

Recommended Posts

So now that I decided to get a Duramax (used 2005 automatic I think) what's the difference between the older version and the new 360 HP model?

Any heads up info on 04 or 05 models?

Thanks,

They also are not restricted to the 3250 RPM limiter. They new Dmax can accelerate all the way to 4900 RPM.

And lets not forget the availability of the 6 speed Ally versus the 5 speed Ally.

DEWFPO,

Absolutely. The sixth gear is the top one and it really creates a great "sweet spot" for cruising about 65-68 mph. The DMax in sixth at this speed is humming along at about 1,600-1,650 RPMs, which is its maximum torque point.

Fuel mileage is excellent when cruising on the freeway at that RPM-range...20-22 mpg and I had one tank of 23.7 mpg running the flat, up the Columbia Gorge on Highway 84.

Sweet.

I have a friend who owns an 05 Duramax and he lusts after the sixth gear of the Allison 1000.

"They new Dmax can accelerate all the way to 4900 RPM"??????

I do not know about other DMAX's but stock LBZ defuel around 3200 RPM. Yes the red line shows almost 4900 but that is a defueled engine going down hill using the engine/allison breaking combination.

I agree they will push the limits of acceleration especially when most of us with one person and a full tank are around 7000 pounds. But then in-turn tow 10,000lbs like it is not there and get over 12mpgs.

Although one of the best parts is having someone tailgating me and I take the pedal to the floor and let up before the turbo kicks in. I love watching them back off while the front of their car is covered in black soot.

I can speak from experience. I Went from an LB7 (2001-2004.5) to an LBZ (second quarter 2006-current) and there IS a noticable difference. All of the way around, from towing to just unloaded acceleration. Don't get me wrong, I loved my LB7. It pulled like a freight train and was sneaky fast after the turbo lag. On the other hand, there is NOT a stock truck on the market that can touch the LBZ. Turbo lag is almost completely eliminated and it is f*ing lightning fast all of the way up. Grabbing gears and breaking the tires loose. I can also speak for the LLY (2004.5-first quarter 2006). Driven my friends many times and I can honestly tell you it had nothing on my LB7. We would run them every once in awhile and we where always nose to nose all of the way through. He may have had a slight edge when it came to pulling. So yes, there is also a huge jump in performance from the LLY to the LBZ.

They didnt "raise the rev limit".

they simply got rid of the red line on the tach because too many weenies were getting worried when their 01-05 Dmax's were going into the "dashed" red zone on grade-braking. To stop the complaining, GM made the 06 clusters have no red line.

the rev limiter is still at 3250. Floor it in park and it will stop at 3250. It is simply a different instrument cluster.

Does anyone have the straight scoop on the 07's and the

fuel issues?

All the pumps say do not run the fuel in the new 07 and up diesels.

Ive been told by a bunch of guys into the diesels and aftermarket

that its no big deal.

Seems to me it is. I've read that the old diesel currently available will plug

up the filters and stuff on the new rigs, and the new diesel fuel wont be

available until Late fall or Early next spring.

Also, are the new 07s with the LBZ gonna run worse than the 06's without all the smog stuff? Or do the LBZs already have all of that?

Reason asking is Sister is considering a new one to tow their 14,000 lb toyhauler.

Anyone know what the new 07 GMC and Chevys are going to look like?

GMC seems to stay the same with a tried and true great look, but Chevy seems to constantly change.

Is this diesel fuel deal even an issue?

Her dealer, told her to maybe wait and see how all this plays out.

Seemed out, becasue she's ready to buy, and he said to wait.

Is this new diesel fuel supposed to be the Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel?

I've read Sulfer doesnt really lube the injectors and pumps like people think it does.

Educate me please. Thanks.
