Lifting a 2wd gmc sierra

ok, i'm new to the site so i'm not sure if i'm posting this in the right place BUT...

i need advice on lifting my 06 gmc sierra...i chose the crew cab with the 4.8L engine when i bought the truck. i know if i go with the 35" tires (which i plan to do) i'll have to change the gears BUT i'm also worried about engine strain. Is the 4.8 enough engine to handle that kind of payload??

Any help/advice WILL be appreciated.

If you switch the gears properly, the engine will have the same strain as before, so no worries.

You still have to add the fact of the increased unsprung weight. 35's plus (most likely) bigger wheels are going to add a a considerable amout of weight. The 4.8 should handle it, but will be a minor burden on it from the get go. The 4.8 is just a hair less in HP and a good bit less on TQ than the 5.3. You'll be a tad slower at the light.

You should be ok, as long as you dont hot rod it. There are other factors that will be under more stress also, not just the motor.

Have fun.

I have an 02 with a 4.8 and it handles my 35"s just fine, it still has plenty of get'up and go when I need it, when I first got my 35's on I was even able to break them loose in a brake stand, when the rubber was new...(I know its stupid and I am asking to break things). The 4.8 has enough HP...not plenty just enough. I also have intake & exhaust, I dont know just how much effect they have, probably not much.

I've got the 4.8 2wd also with 33's. I can tell a big difference in the acceleration after the tire swap. I know the tires are heavier than stock, but I think the main difference is the gear ratio. I really need some 3.73 or 4.10 gears. I have to drive around in 3rd most of the time around town unless I'm cruising the freeway for a while. I've also got an intake and exhaust and that did help the low end quite a bit, but I still think lower gears will help the most.

When I had my 1987 Chevy 4x4 it had a 5.0 (305) motor and I ran 42" SuperSwampers for about 3 years with 3:73 gears truck came stock with 31" tires, you wont hurt the motor at all just as everyone says yull see a little slower takeoffs and more fuel used. The differance between the 4.8 and the 5.3 is only 20HP more and 33 more torque with the 5.3 which is not much more. I wouldnt change the gears if you do then you can say bye bye to your warranty if you should have driveline or rearend problems also most dealers will only let you go one size up on tires anything bigger they wont touch it till stock size is put back on and you know the dealers if you have driveline problems they will blame it on the bigger tires no matter what if you take it in with the larger tires on it. Do take in fact that your speedo will be off by about 5-8 mph, speedo says 55mph your truck will be doing 60-63 if your coming from a 265 tire to a 315 which is like a 35" tire.

As for warranty, check with your provider. Mine said that once I did the lift and tires the only thing they wouldn't cover were tie-rods...they even still covered my ball joints. As for speedometer, its a ratio. A 35" tires travels a farther distance in a single rotation then a 30" tire does so the difference increases with speed. At 6ph it may be off 1mph or so where at 60mph it may be off 10mph. It not a set difference or your speedo could read 0 and you'd be going 4 mph. For a 35 I found it to be roughly a 6-1 so at 30 you're really going 35 and at 60 you're really going 70. For every 6 mph faster you go add another 1 to the speedo.

But im just a dump Marine grunt....math isn't my strong point...nor is thinking.
