Although I really liked everything else that the programmer helped with, more power and better fuel economy.
dizzy Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 My truck is a 2005 2500HD w/6.0L gas and I have the HyperTechIII programmer, had it installed for over a year. It is very good for correcting/adjusting speedometer gear ratio changes when changing from non-stock tire size. It also works great for added power, but does absolutely NOTHING for improving gas milage, in fact it gets worse with HypertechIII programming installed. I have tried it at both 87 and 91 Octane settings, poor gas milage with both. I was getting a B0229 OBDII code (HVAC activator fault code). I need to take it to the dealer to get it resolved so they advise you back out the HypertechIII programming before taking it to dealer for repairs. So back at stock programming, gas milage immediately jumps from 10.6 to 12.7MPG (I have a LT with real-time computer). 2 tanks of gas later still 12.6 to 12.7 in city driving. I lost noticable power (at Wide Open Throttle) and it seems like it is in OD by the time you hit 30MPH but MPG is MUCH MUCH BETTER with STOCK programming than with HypertechIII. I also find Hypertech's tech support about the worst I've ever delt with if they ever do respond at all (the latter has been my experience). The one I have is Part #: 30022 and it has firmware version: 15.12.023.35. I emailed them once inquiring about poor gas milage and possibly a firmware upgrade, never got even a response. So Hypertech isn't worth the $400 in my opinion. From what I've seen the SuperChips may be the better way to go and there seems to be optional tuning programs you can get. You can also change the transmission shift points but those are only valid at WOT which is nice but it doesn't appear to work at partial thottle. For example; stock programming seems to short-shift to improve gas milage in town driving, Hypertech removes that. Hypertech's dyno's all seem to be out of date or they use the same dyno results. Do your homework first.
Jimmy J Posted September 20, 2006 Posted September 20, 2006 IMHO, if I were gonna fork out the cash for a handheld, it'd be the new FLASHPAQ.
