mileage and problems with your trucks

108,000 and going strong. Only thing done out of the ordinary is transfer case front seal change. But I do have a front wheel hub on the way out the door.

05 z71 13000 miles about 19-20 MPG hwy. only prob has been the steering shaft.

 

88 silverado 4x4 198000 miles (OD stopped turning long ago)

 

I get about 120 miles to a tank 25 Gal. because of what I did to to :cool: . Ive had the trans rebuilt, and a power window motor.EGR valve, distributor shaft. Thats about it.

'96 Crew Cab one ton, 454, 137,000 miles, bought it used at about 90,000 miles......hydraboost brake booster, water pump, window motor, oxygen sensors, EGR valve (needs replacing right now), A-frame bushings.

 

'92 half ton extended cab, 350, 177,000 miles, bought it new.......water pump, power steering pump, alternator twice, starter brushes, radiator, u-joints, A-frame bushings, idler arm, EGR valve (needs replacing right now), multiple window motors, radio control head, brake light switch. The 700R4 transmission on this truck was changed at 37,000 miles under warranty and the damage to the transmission was my fault. This truck needs to have the door hinges rebushed right now.

 

Both trucks still have the original engines. I've been pleased with both trucks.

2005 GMC 2500HD (gas) with ~11,000 miles and I average ~14mpg. I still have to get to the dealer to repair all the items listed below.

- infamous 'steering clunk' :driving:

- blown speaker in passenger side door

- 'whining' under hood that sounds like a bad PS pump

- 'buzz' sound coming from the muffler shroud

 

All of these are 'minor' problems and I have had no drivetrain / powerplant issues.

2002 2500HD 73,000 miles with 8.1 and allison. I fought an oil consumption battle for a long time and finally convinced a dealer to do the Intake manifold gasket repair which fixed that. Right after that it started leaking engine oil and was very tough to find out where. I thought it was the back of the intake manifold....turns out the rear main seal had started working out of the block. All was fixed under the extended warranty I bought with the truck. Other than that..not many issues at all. I love my truck.

1995 2500 4x4 extended cab. Just bought it used this summer. Put tires on it, replaced driver's side tie rods, new brakes.

 

Still needs: pitman/idler arm replaced, plugs/wires/cap/rotor, some interior pieces need replaced, 1 large dent in pass. side of box needs repaired, and needs an exhaust donut and new muffler/tail pipe. Oh yeah, and I've got an intermittent MAP code and an erratic wheel speed sensor that I'm not going to bother replacing until the bearing is bad. For a work truck, I can't justify a $200 fix to a light being on.

 

Otherwise, this truck runs STRONG and hasn't given me any new problems that'll give me a headache.

I have a 2005 2500HD duramax and just got rid of my 2004, had both of them for several months:

 

My 2005 (21,000 miles) and my 2004 (48,000 miles) had two problems in common: the steering clunk you mentioned, and the driver side window switch constantly "falls in" on the right side of it... you have to pull the window switch up to get it back.

 

My 2004 took 2 fuel injectors and an injector line (on the trip home with the guy I sold it to). I believe the injectors could have been due to bad fuel.

 

Shortly after the injectors gave out, the EGR valve gave out. I believe it was related to the massive quantites of carbon the bad injectors were producing.

 

I don't care about the mechanical issues though, the thing that pisses me off the most is how thin the paint on the 2005 is. I always park in the middle of nowhere in parking lots and baby my trucks like no other, and if you just brush up against the 2005 you have a scratch that cannot be removed. If you compare the seams where the door skin ends with my old 1996 Blazer, the paint (or rather clear coat) must be a tenth of what it was on the blazer. NOT what I expected of a $51,000 truck I wanted to keep looking like brand new.

I have an '03 GMC Sierra 6.6l 4x4, just bought it 2 weeks ago and it's got speedometer problems. I'll be going down the freeway and the speedometer will go down to 0. Then sometimes it will go back up to 25 or something when I know I'm going at least 60. I think spacehog was merely pointing out that a MSRP of $51,000 should get the consumer a top-rate vehicle (including a top-rate paintjob). New trucks are far from top-rate in my book.... seems like GM (as well as other car manufacturers) are more concerned with adding 'bells and whistles' instead of quality :seeya: .

 

And yes, these trucks do have poor quality paintjobs (very thin paint) and have you noticed the orange peel on new vehicles compared to older vehicles?

    • GDI Injector tips are in the combustion chamber and yes, they are subject to the same aromatic hydrocarbon based carbon build up the entire chamber is subjected to. Chevron Techron is a PEA based cleaner (polyether amine)  that is VERY effective if the dose is high enough.  Carbon the tips disrupts the spray pattern so keeping them clean is kind of a big deal. It will clean more than the injector tips. It will keep the inside of the injector tip clean as well. When they shut off they 'hot soak' building varnish internally behind the pintle. The tip, unlike most MFI systems have several orifices of very small diameter. They have to stay clean to work right. That spray pattern is supposed to spray into the cup in the piston, not all over the cylinder walls. Old guys will understand...    Top Tier Chevron has enough of the cleaner to be effective if used regularly. Other solutions could be Shell V Power Nitro + Premium and Exxon/Mobil Supreme Plus Premium ONLY use a different chemistry to the same effect with the added bonus of a friction/antiwear additive as well. Red Line SI-1 is PEA based as well with an upper cylinder lube. There's a white paper on their site for shock treatment of system left untreated for long periods. AMSOIL PI has a full system cleaner of yet another chemistry that will strip carbon out of the power cylinder pretty quick. Gumout Regane is also PEA based but at very low doses and those that are isopropanol based will not be effective. Alcohol content is way to low. Chevron Techron in any pump gas, Use by package instructions. 10 oz per 15 gallons every 3,000 miles. First use may require two treatments.    So, Techron, Red Line SI-1 and AMSOIL PI if batch treating and Shell, XOM Premium or any Chevron Fuel will not just keep it clean, but will clean it if dirty. No other fuel "I'm aware of will do that".    Flex Fuel motors. If you use at least 40% alcohol on a regular basis they won't carbon at all. PEA is not recommended for fuels over E-20     (www.carparts.com)
    • It is always a good idea to exercise it at least every few months to make sure the actuators don’t get stuck. It is also a good idea to actually drive it for at least a few hundred feet when you do that so seals experience motion and oil movement.  Off pavement or snow/ice is best for this, but driving wet pavement in a straight line for a  short distance will work if you don’t have other options. I have  forgotten and gone as long as six months between exercising it on my 2021 and it has always shifted promptly.  I usually just use my straight 300 foot gravel driveway.  
    • Absolutely!  These forums are legion with posts of people complaining that their truck wouldn't go into 4WD when they needed it to.  Most of them hadn't used it ever or in years.   I try to run mine through the paces every month or so and drive it a few miles on a dirt trail near the house a couple times a year if not already off-roading.
    • The battery is  very new, The  truck is  essentially undrivable  so I have had it  towed  to the  dealer. Since  this is an E Assist  truck  the dealer  seems  the only option at this point. Scan showes multiple  codes. The  repair wll not be  cheap
    • Not a bad idea to check codes. But, if you have an old battery and/or electrical gremlins, most of those codes will be false.
