Vortec impletmented

I'm looking for a used Suburban and want to get some insight into the Vortec engine. OK, the first year of the SPFI Vortec was '96? What year did they modify the SPFI to Multi Port?

Any thoughts or opinions on these vs. the 350 is welcomed;-) Any years to steer clear of or to keep an eye out for?

Thanks

The Vortec is a good motor, solid and efficient. The Vortecs (5.0l and 5.7l) have problems with the intake manifold gasket blowing out, which is not a problem until you run out of anti-freeze and the motor overheats. Most of them, once they are replaced, do not have a problem. The only other problems I have run across is the lack of performance specific parts for example, intake manifolds, there are no alternatives other than stock.

Hope this helps!

They are good engines. I have a '99 Sub. mcreyaufmiller is right about the lack of performance parts. However, changing out the factory air cleaner and removing the air restriction in the throttle body blade help alot. They are very torquey engines. But the intake manifold runs out of breath about above 4500 rpm.

I really believe that the vortec 350 was better suited to the weight of the suburban than the 5.3.

The vortec 350 is a sequential port injected engine. It just uses 8 injectors centrally located behind the throttle body connected to hoses that go to small poppet valves at the port.
