Rear issues

Here's my story:

Had an '04 Silverado 1500 ext. cab 2WD w/ 5.3 and 3.73 locker. Great truck, no issues.

Now: '07 Silverado Classic 1500 crew w/ 4.8 and 3.23 open rear. Also a great truck, but had a rear end whine around 40 mph since new. Took it to the dealer last week @ 700 miles. Tech verified the noise and replaced the ring and pinion and carrier bearings. According to his write-up on the repair order, the noise was still there. He contacted the GM service hotline, and they told him to reshim the pinion a bit tighter.

Picked up the truck Friday (they had the truck 4 days), and the noise is still there, at the same speed, but the volume of the whine is lessened by about 50%. It's not as annoying as before. I could live with it. Of course now, I'm listening for it, too

Question: has anyone had a similar experience? Will the whine get worse as time goes on and/or resuly in a rear failure in the future?

Thanks,

Drew
