I am looking at an '05 GMC Sierra crew cab 5.3 V8. The dealer said it has 3.42 gears and that the 2005 Sierras did not come with 3.73 gears? Is this right? I want the 3.73 gears for towing a camper, but the dealer said the 3.42 rear end is rated for towing 8,000lbs. Is this right?

The dealer is full of it. I have a 2005 Sierra with 3.73 gears. It is a $100 dollar option plainly stated on my window sticker.

have a great day,

I have a 1500 crew cab with 3.73 gears. Not many of them out there and i dont think they even list the tow rating for these gears in the owners manual for this year.

Mine also have 3.73's. I think that it was a mid year change. My owners manual doesn't list tow ratings either for the 3.73.

I was told 8k max for towing for my `05 Crew. I`ve got 3.73 gears, and learned toget the 8k towing, you`ll have to get a weight distribution hitch. I think the truck will tow around 6500 on the OEM hitch, but I may be wrong. I think there is a sticker on the hitch or it is stamped on it.

It seemed that most dealers order the crews with the 3.23 or the 3.42 for gas mileage but the 3.73 was available you just had to search or order one in 2005. I ordered mine. I mean who buys a truck for gas mileage. I saw a crewcab on a lot that had the 4.8l ,3.23 rear-end ,onstar, leather I mean this thing was decked out this wasn't a truck this was a car with a missing trunk lid.

If your towing alot try to get the 4.10's IMO.

Exactly. If towing is your main concern...you need the 4.10s. Going from 3.42 to 3.73 you won't even notice the difference at all. 3.42s are awesome for all around use. I love mine. 4.10s are what you want if you work your truck hard every day.

I thought i saw in the brochure that all u could get in the 1500 crew cab was the 5.3l. i have never seen one with the 4.8L. not saying they were not made just didnt think they were.
