02 Tahoe AC Compressor Squeel

When the air conditioner or defroster is engaged in my 2001 (not 2002) Tahoe there is a high pitch squeeling noise. It immediately stops when I go to heat or push the AC button off.

 

The dealer wants to replace the compressor, but here it is 35 degrees out and I can wait as it's quite a bit of money. I am do not remember the problem showing itself with the defroster before it went in for the diagnosis but I am not sure what they did to make it worse. Any ideas?

 

Is there a way to disable the AC clutch so I can use the defroster without agrevating the compressor's condition?

 

From above I can't even see the compressor.

 

I tied pulling the 2 fuses but they disable all control of the HVAC system, not just the AS clutch.

To disable the compressor you will need to unplug it at the compressor. The compressor is located on the passenger side of the engine at the bottom.

Pulling the A/C relay should prevent the A/C compressor clutch from engaging. If you physically disconnect the lutch wire at the compressor, make sure you tie it securely out of the way so it does not get sucket into the rotating pulley.

 

Are you sure the compressor noise is not from a bad belt? The clutch pulley bearing may be going out too.

It only makes noise when (and always) when the ac or defroster are turned on.

When off, the system freewheels without sounds.

Now that I pulled the plug, the noise is absent.

 

I am not positive myself that it's the compressor but it sounds reasonable to me

The dealer suggests replacing compressor, tension pulley and belt.

The sound is like a seizing bearing; high pitch squeel.

Sounds like they're covering their butt. Sure, it may be both the tensioner and the compressor, but I'd go with the tensioner pulley first and possibly save yourself many hundreds of dollars. They might be able to detect the source of the noise with a stethoscope (or long screwdriver) but sometimes it's hard to isolate these noises since they can travel.

 

Although the tensioner turns all the time, even with the a/c compressor off, there's an extra load applied when the compressor is on, so it could be just that. Same goes with the compressor pulley (the part the belt rides on). There's a bearing in there that could make the noise only when the compressor is on.

 

I'm not 100% sure the comp. pulley bearing is available separately on that one, but it may be. Again, cheaper than a complete compressor.

I'll get back in there and see if the tensioner shows any looseness.

 

Maybe a second physical opinion would be of value.

I have reservations about the tech that checked it because he did the front ABS sensor recall cleaning and the abs had the same low speed cycling problem as I drove out of their driveway. I had cleaned the sensors a couple years ago myself and it worked fine. He did it and it wasn't.

FYI, on my 02 Suburban, I had a similiar problem. It would only squeel on occasion, but it was pretty nasty. I changed the belt, and after about 2 weeks, the belt broke. I guess with the older belt, when the pulley would try to lock up, the belt didn't have enough bite to break. Luckily it was under extended warranty and they replaced the compressor. It cost me about $150 bucks, but the total ticket was just over 1 grand.

when you replace an A/C compressor, you must also replace the receiver-dryer or the accumulator, which ever system your vehicle has. There is either a receiver-dryer/ expansion valve system, or an accumulator/orifice tube type A/C system.

I thought something along those lines, but my dealer didn't mention that in the price. I have less and less confidence in them now.

It's freezing out right now so it's fading in my mind.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
