A "New" transfer case is coming...

The dealer called and talked to my wife today.  He attended a meeting last night and the Head of the Regional reps was there.  My service mgr spent quite awhile discussing my problems with him, and I'm sure he told him my $37Kplus truck has now been sitting in his service bay for 9 days.

The "head" rep said that there were appearantly some transfer cases that were put in HD's that had an incorrectly machined "shaft".  I don't know what shaft it is, (please remember my wife is telling me this... LOL), so he went ahead and Authorized a totally new Transfer Case to be sent down from Lansing Michigan.  The bad news is that it probably won't get here until Monday so I'm guessing I won't get my truck back until Tues or Wed.

Maybe this incorrectly machined shaft is the reason as to why my dealer couldn't find a replacement part.  Either way I'm much happier having a new case installed as opposed to having my other one rebuilt (with only 3k miles on it).

In case anyone is wondering when my truck was built so they can check their "on the fly" engagement of 4wd, with the pushbutton option, my truck was built June 12 or June 13 2001.

Thats good to hear.  A brand new t case is better than a rebuilt one.  Just think your saving miles on your truck for a few wks.

You mean all 35 that he puts on in a typical two week stretch?

You sure should be happy to be getting a whole new case out of this mess.  I'm always pretty skeptical of rebuilt anything, you have to remember that it was rebuilt for a reason.  Too bad they didn't find out EXACTLY what the problem was, maybe it could have helped a few members here, but at least GM recognized there was a problem and stood behind it.

yea a whole 35 miles haha wear and tear

I put 218 miles over 14 days.  I filled up for the first time since jan 31st yesterday.  Prices seemed to have gone up a bit

Hey 2 fill ups a month is great (for now)

Geez I don't know how you guys barely put on any miles.  I only really just drive around town and I can't stop putting miles on my truck.  Did you guys buy yours to look at in wonder and awe ;)

Good to hear Shane.

See if you can get any info from your service manager as far as a certain range of serial numbers of the transfer cases, or dates they were built, that may have been affected by this.

I will inquire some more when I talk to them face-to-face.  So far every conversation has been over the phone, and they have been "great".  They continuosly apologize for the F150 "rental" and it's kind of an on going joke between us...  I'll be happy when I trade keys with them!!!   LOL

My wife said that it is the "Main Shaft" after I drilled here for some clarification...

I'll keep you guys up to date...

I wish. SPending 8-10 hrs 2-3 times a wk at school keeps themiles down.

Shane,

Glad that it is all working out for you. My question is this, is the defective part found in manule T-cases?

I don't know the answer, but I'll find out if the main shaft is the same between the two cases.

I know you miss your baby, but driving a $ord can't be that bad, can it?

I've been doing a durabillity test on the rental F@rd...  So far it has held up well!!!   Have you ever heard the expression "drive it like you stole it"?

I don't really like the rental truck because it seems primative to my Chevy.  I had a '97 LD F250 and Ford has been using the same parts bins for 5-6 years now.  I think they need to work on the interior a little more.

Actually, I'm surprised that they even considered a rebuilt unit or rebuilding the current one you have.  When it comes to transmissions and transfer cases, GM usually just replaces them especially since you have such minimal mileage on it.  I know we wouldn't have questioned it and simply put a new one in.

The main shaft is the input shaft right from the transmission.  IF the shaft wasn't ground right, it was probably too large in diameter and/or not machined smooth.  What happens it the bearings that spin around it won't spin as freely and hum as you noted in the other thread.  But without seeing a blown up schematic of our transfer case, I can't "presume" what went wrong.
