Torn between which tires to buy

Recommended Posts

I have a:

2001 GMC Sierra 1500 4.8L 4x2 and when I bought it a few months ago they had Goodyear Integrity's on them (P235/70/R16) .....*shiver*.

Anways I'm in the hunt to get some new tires, but need a little advice. First, I don't do much off-road at all being that it's not a 4x4...but we do get alot of snow, ice, rain, and mud here in Virginia.

I've been talking with a bunch of folks here and they all give their different recommendations, and just to let you know I do quite a bit of highway driving to and from work. So I need something that has good wear, but can also handle the snow, rain and mud well.

I want atleast a 255/70/R16 but preferable a 265/70/R16 or 265/75/R16...just not sure and was hoping someone could help me on this. I want the truck to sit higher but someone said that if I don't have a 4x4 then having 265/75/R16's is actually going to do me worse so they suggested either 265/70/R16's or 255/70/R16's. What is your take on this?

Also now for the brands. I'm kinda torn between getting BF Goodrich LongTrail T/A's, Bridgestone Dueler Revo's or the Bridgestone Dueler A/T's or the APT 3's.

There is a place here where I live where they can get me 4 REVO's with balance, installation and everything for $708. ($156 a tire), but then someone said that I do NOT want to have Revo's on my truck if it's not a 4x4 and they suggested Dueler APT 3's or the A/T's.

As you can see, I'm all confused and need some serious advice and help.

Thanks in advance for all your answers guys.

I liked the BFG Long Trails for a 2wd and the BFG A/T's for a 4x4. I would stick with factory size tires. otherwise taller tires equate to less get up and go and can get worse mpg. A lot bigger can start affecting stopping distance. If you don't want any adverse reactions from altering tire size go with factory size. If you are trying to make your truck sit higher tires alone won't make a noiceable enough difference. Even going with a tire 2" taller than original, it will ony raise the truck 1". Plus larger tires usually cost a smidge more.

Appreciate the info. Yea I think I'm going to go with the 255/70/R16's with are only slightly bigger and it's the size used as an "Alternate" by the factory. That way I can get slightly bigger tires than what I have now.

I was thinking of paying the little extra money and going with either:

Bridgestone Dueler A/T REVO with UNI-T AQII ($160/tire)

Bridgestone Dueler A/T with UNI-T ($137/tire)

BFGoodrich LongTrail T/A ($120/tire)

I really want the REVO's though.

I put the REVO's on my wife's 2wd suburban and love them. They are really quiet and are awesome in the rain. Being from the south, I can't speak about snow, but I think you would be happy with them.

If I were fitting tires to a daily driven 2wd that needed traction on wet and/or snow covered roads I would be buying Goodyear Fortera's. I run the Assurance Triple Tread tires on my Buick which are similar and they are nothing less than exceptional in ANY weather condition.

Check them out here

I Agree, i am currently running fortera's on my silverado, i put them on in november and i love them they have excellent traction(usually i have to put 600lbs of sand in the box to go anywhere during our winters but i have not put them in yet).

The ride is excellent as well with the kevlar belts insteed of steel.

they look cool to

I"ve got the Assurance Triple Treads on my Grand Prix, and like the Buick above, they have been nothing short of amazing in all weather conditions. They're starting to show their wear now since they have about 35k miles on them (yeah, I've done a bit of tire smoking...but then who hasn't), but when they're gone they'll be replaced with another set.

I've had the REVOS on my truck for just under 8 months and i love them, i will buy another set in another 20,000 miles. Amazing rain traction and good dry traction

2nd set of Revo's on the truck here. Unbelievable wet traction improvement over stock. They're also great for the Lake Effect snow that we get during a typical winter(yes, we're getting hosed this year).

I just wish these OEM Wrangler ST's would wear out so I can replace them with some real truck tires. While the ST's have given great tread wear, they have lousy traction on anything but dry pavement. Why does GM put mini-van tires on a 4x4 truck? When they finally wear out I will be replacing them with LT rated, load range C all-terain tires in the stock 265/70/17 size. Still haven't decided between the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor or the Cooper Discoverer ATR.

Yeah the Triple treads do look cool, even on a LeSabre. 40k on them in conditions ranging from summer in Nevada to winter in Maine and they have at least that many miles left on them.

You can always find a nice set of new or near new OEM Generals on eBay cheap.

Those OEM Generals should be sent to the dump right out of the factory. What's bad is they are a much better tire than the Uniroyal Tiger De-clawed tires that came on my 93.

My tire of choice right now is the Futura brand from Pep Boys. They are high quality tires made by Cooper Tire and are very reasonably priced. I bought a set of Futura Super Sport GLS's for my truck. In the 40,000 miles they have been on my truck they haven't required any rebalancing and have to be the quietest, smoothest performance tire I have ever bought. They stick to the road pretty good too. I don't know about their All-terrain tires but I would give them a try if that is what I was looking for.
