On-Star dead in 2008(?)

At the car show today and talking with a non-On-Star dealer guy. Asked if their vehicle could get On-Star and he started spouting about how On-Star is analog and workes with cell towers and how it will all be dead in 2008 when everyone is forced to switch over to digital. I didn't have any information on this and couldn't call his bs.

 

So helps me with these questions...

 

- Is On-Star analog or digital

- Isn't it sat driven (aka, like XM?)

- What happens in 2008?

I believe the older versions 02-early 04 are analog and can be replaced with a digital unit for around $500 or a 3 year subscription. The analog units are single digit phone dialers: you say a number onstar repeats; with digital onstar you say the 10 digit number and onstar repeats.
