New Engines !

When GM offered the current C/K trucks in '99

they came with the new vortec engine family.

 

4.3L V6

4.8L V8

5.3L V8

and now

8.1L V8

and of course the DuraMax

 

Since thier introduction, these powerplants have been the most advanced engines in the truck community.

 

All build more power, drink less fuel and emit cleaner emissions than anything the other 2 guys have.

 

Cool.

 

I was watching one of those automotive TV shows and I must admit I was reading at the time and listening when they went to thier New Products segment.

 

I heard the lady say that GM is soon to toss out the Vortec engine family as they have another new family of engines which will be even MORE powerful, MORE fuel Efficient and emit even CLEANER exhaust.

 

I would guess that the DuraMax would be the exception.

 

Has anyone heard any confirmation to this ?

 

When can we expect to see this new engine family ?

Could it have been about the variable displacement engines?

GM’s Displacement on Demand technology, which allows the engine to run seamlessly on six cylinders at times to maximize fuel savings; direct injection gasoline combustion system for increased engine power, improved fuel economy and reduced emissions; and a combined starter generator.

I think you misinterpreted it.

 

The only engines to replace the current Vortec's will be the next generation Vortec's that will have stuff like DoD, variable valve timing, dual in cam blocks, etc, etc.

 

It's kinda cyclical, the Corvette engine team learns some new tricks that filter into the Vortec engine teams designs, then the Vortec engine team come up with their own tricks that then get implemented into the Vette engines.  This process keeps going and going and going and going..................

My understanding is that the DoD engines will begin to replacement the current Vortecs in 2004 and will be phased in over the following few years.  I think what you are talking about is the 42-volt motor that GM placed between the engine and transmission.  The system actually shuts the engine off when you come to a stop (traffic light, stop sign, etc.) but keeps the electrical system operating.  As soon as you step on the gas to accelerate it quietly restarts the engine.  There are quite a few articles floating around on the internet about it.  Check GMTrucks.com, PickupTruck.com, and GM.com for news articles explaining the engine.  I could only find one ( http://www.pickuptruck.com/html/stories/gmctech/three4.html ) but I know there are more.
