04 Tahoe 4 wd not unlocking ??

my 04 tahoe seems as if the 4wd does not release...there is not any differnce in the way the truck "feels' in 2 hi vs auto 4wd as my 04 avalanche does ?? also the is a slight bearing /tire noise from the front of the truck. also the gas mileage really sucks compaired to my 02 suburban whuch this replaced..so was thinking it's not coming out of auto 4wd evem though the button lights show correct, any ideas ? thanks Rob

Just wondering if you can feel if the front wheels are binding when in 2wd when turning a sharp corner as opposed to 4hi, in auto 4wd you really shouldn't feel any difference, if you have access to a hoist you may want to lift it off the ground and start the engine and put trans in drive and see if the front wheels turn. You may also want to listen w/ a stethoscope to the bearings in the front diff. Or pull the drain plug and see if there is a lot metal on drain plug or if fluid looks silver, that would be a indication that the bearings are out, witch could reflect fuel mileage but that really shouldn't make it not shift out of 4wd well I hope this helps you out. Or the other option is your local dealer.

Try marking your front driveshaft, after doing so move the truck a few feet and see if the mark on the shaft moved, if it did then shes stuck in 4wd, if its still there then shes out of 4wd.
