6.0 Vrtec Max

I am considering a new 2007 ext. cab 4x4 with the vortec max 6.0 with active fuel management and was wondering if anyone on here owned one of these trucks yet and what kind of fuel mileage your were getting. Also how is the power with the 6.0, my local dealers only have 5.3's on the lot so I haven't had the opportunity to drive one. Thanks in advance for any info!

Hey if you do a search there was some recent posts on the new 6.0L. BigTool on these forums has a new 07 6.0L and loves it. Here is a link to another forum with some pics and he posts his miliage...

that should help you out i'v decided to go with the 6.0 and max towing package should be ordering soon...I haven't had the opportunity to drive the new 6.0 but my dad has an 06 danali with the 6.0 and it felt stronger then the current 5.3. Roughly i think its like 50 more hp and 40lb of torque. So it will be more just up to you to decide if its worth it to you or not. 5.3 will get roughly 10% to 20% better fuel economy all of coarse depending how you drive it. and heres one more topic about it in the other forum

good luck and like i said more info on this forum if you search as well..

Recently purchased a 07 Silverado LTZ ext cab with V Max package.

Have not got many miles on it yet but so far pretty happy.

Went with the VMax cause I do a fair bit of pulling, and having just come from a truck with a blown tranny wanted the heavy duty tranny and rear end.

Power wise it does seem to have more than the 5.3L just driving around but when it's kicked down it feels like alot more.

Read some of the forums and there is the 4 second closed fuel loop delay being talked about, something I will fix with custom PCM tuning or a programmer sooner or later.

MPG is actually pretty good for a truck so new.City driving 13/14 mpg, highway 15/16mpg at 75mph.This is close to what my F150 got(with mods) and it's new!!!

The DOD does not really seem to do too much, only goes to V4 on down hills, but I guess it still helps.

Only blemish on this truck as far as I am concerned is the 4 speed tranny......gets the job done but wish for 6 speed in the Denali!!!

Hope this helps

What dose the 4 second closed fuel loop delay do? IF your getting 15/16 at 75 mph, sounds like 17/18 is possible at 55 to 65 mph. Thanks for the info!

I get anwhere from 17-19mpg highway speed driving. I will state it again, the 6.0 is the shizit. It makes me so d**n angry to hear people saying that it's all of the sudden junk and now the 5.3 is a superior engine "all because of edmunds review" don't believe everything you read guys. The only thing holding the v-max back is tm. And this is a factor in all gm motors. You have to spend more time than just a test drive to really appreciate the extra meat the 6.0 offers. The 5.3 gives the impression of being powerful because it's always downshifting and running high rpm. The 6.0 going down the interstate just lean into the throttle without downshifting it pegs 98mph in a split second. the 5.3 is going to be down shifting trying to gernade itself to perform the same function. If you choose to go ahead and put you're foot into it at 3-4k rpm this thing is just sick. And this is after 33" tires. my 5.3 avalanche could barely maintain highway speed without downshifting every time you came to even the slightest hill and it had a hypertech programmer and 33's

s also. I can't wait to see what's going to happen this weekend when i get my performance tune, and get some tm removed. Bottom line go and drive both alotttt. You will definitely see the difference is more than just that one drinks more gas...

The 5.3 is not going to grenade itself running at high rpm all the time. That's what it was made for it can run all day at that. The 6 is no different, however in fairness I think your avalanche was a much heavier vehicle. To compare how they ran on the highway, that really is all about the 4 speed tranny and how garbage the overdrive gear ratio is.

the weight issue is irrelevant my dad also has a white 04 avalanche 4x4 with 4.10's for that matter curb weight 5713lbs curb weight on my sierra is 5371 not to mention the avalanche i'm addressing here has the factory tires, mine has 20's with 33" tires, I also carry around two of my take offs in the bed, "which makes it ride like an avalanche/denali" So the weight ratio should be about dead equal. Yes i know the 5.3 and 6.0 can both run at 4,000rpm all day long, but I'm simply stating that the 6.0 has the balls to peg the speedo out without any effort what so ever without downshifting and running higher rpms. and when you really do get into it, there's just that much more seat of pants feel to it. It just makes for a much smoother interstate passing and driving in general. My avalnche with 33's felt like a rocking boat with 33's going down the interstate because it spent so much time jumping between OD and 3rd gear. But this is just my experience and opinion, like i've said before i'm not saying the 5.3 is a bad engine, the 6.0 is just a nice leap imo. The fuel savings versus the 6.0 with 3.73 vs 5.3 with 4.10's would be almost non existent, plust when you get the 6.0 you also get a HD tranny, bigger rearend, disc brakes, etc all for about 1900 bucks if you don't get the nht package, you can't beat that imo. You can spend 1900 bucks on the 5.3 putting bolt ons trying to get to the performance of the 6.0 but you're still not going to have the Hd tranny etc.

sorry for the long post.

I've driven a new 5.3/3.73 and a new 6.0Max/4:10. The 5.3 'felt' better. yes it was reving, but was so seamless and smooth it just 'felt' better. the 6.0 felt sluggish, and i test drove it for 30 minutes on the highway and everywhere. the 6.0 would do different things when i put the pedal down, sometimes it would go awesome, some times it would die and actually stumbled a few times, thinking this must be the torque management issue? why do they need this TM thing when they've been making this same drivetrain for 5+ years? my old 02-6.0/4:10 felt much better. i was ready to buy the 6.0 but just could drop the 38K after driving it. granted, get a 7K lb trailer on them and the 6.0 will shine, well shine is a poor word compared to the 8.1, but shine compared the the 5.3. i'm a biased reporter though as i'm currently driving an 8.1. i am soooooo disapointed with the current engines and will probably keep the 8.1 till they do something different. they both did ride and steer like a nice sedan, very impressed.

I agree...My 6.0 pulls like a train.

Yeah, but you're cheating. Your 6.0 is just a liiiiiiittle bit different. :)

What I've read about is mostly from Edmunds.com,from a comparison they did between the Silverado/Tundra and Titan.

Essentially the truck has to floored for 4 seconds before the computer programming allows full fuel to the engine(open loop), before engine will make the power it can.

Seems to make pretty good power to me but I have not really abused it yet to see if this 4 second delay is really there.

Will be really interested when programmers/PCM tunes start rolling out for the 07's.

One other thing I've noticed on the 07 6L's is that the exhaust is very small compared to the exhaust I just looked at on an 07 2500 with the 6L.Local truck performance shop said it's the exact same exhaust as on the 5.3L's so you would think an exhaust alone would make a pretty big difference.

On another note I have been driving my little lady's 07 Ford Sportrac a bit lately and my 6L is averaging better MPG in town than her 4.6L V8,thought that was pretty funny!!

Big Tool, I take it that you have the 4:10's in your truck, if so that is great mileage. Also can you explain what the NHT package is ?

    • Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.
    • That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
    • I wonder kind of nuts and bolts they will come up with next? Jim
    • “It should be recognized, however, that there becomes a point where fuel economy oils do not make much economic sense for the end consumer—we talk about a fuel saving of ~€100 compared to a risk of €1000 Euros if the oil is too thin and causes increased engine wear rates. However, the benefit of these oils accrues to the car manufacturers. If their vehicles can save 1–2% fuel by using a special fuel economy lubricant, then that OEM can drastically reduce the amount of fines they need to pay.”   I liked this and the following paragraph as well but it’s really only touching the beginning of the benefits OEMs see from spec’ing these oils. After you factor in “out of warranty” service work and new car sales when these engines fail before their time, it’s a good racket for them. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you!
