DRL Problem

I have an 01 silverado and for some reason my driver side day time running light keeps going out. I have replaced three in the last month. I checked the wiring and there are no shorts or lose wires. All the fuses are the right size. No condensation in the headlight either. Any ideas?

It's a pretty common site to see these trucks with only 1 bulb working around here.

No idea on the cause. Replace the working passenger DRL with a burned out bulb and wait for the drivers side one to go out again. At least that way it looks better.

Try two things. Check the socket for any carbon streaking or burning. Even if it's discolored it may be bad, replace it. Second, go for the LL light bulbs. They're in the same place as the regular bulbs at the store. They just have 'LL' at the end of the number. It stands for Long Life. They're a little more robust and will last longer. I've had Amber LL bulbs in mine for 4 years and 55,000 miles with no burn-outs.

put 4114 bulbs. The sylvania web site shows it as an upgrade. It is supposed to be a longer lasting bulb.

+1. The 4114 are 14v bulbs as opposed to the original 12v bulbs. I read that voltage spikes often blew the 12v ones, and GM went to the 14v bulbs to keep this from happening.

I have a 2006 GMC 2500HD 4WD Duramax with 20K miles on it and am having the same problem. The bulbs that came in the truck new are the Sylvania #4114K and the sockets are turning black from excessive heat.

It appears this is more than just a bulb issue.

Anyone have any other information about the problem and cure?

Thanks, Dave

This must be common on multiple gm vehicles..........a buddy of mine has a 2000 venture van and seems to blow the lights every couple months, there is carbon streaking, I mentioned to him this idea of going to the 14v lights to maybe prevent surges.........hopefully this will help him, and in the future if I ever need this info (knock on wood)

There seems to have been little or no activity on this subject in quite a while, but the problem looms on. I was watching my voltmeter on a recent road trip and noticed it varying from just above 13v to almost 15 v. Is there not some type of voltage stabilizer that could control the voltage fluctuation? I have had problems with many of my LED light conversions and have been told by the vendors that the voltage spikes are the cause of premature failure. If anyone has a solution or suggestion, please PM me or email me at [email protected] . Thanks and happy motoring!

Ive had my LED's in for about a year and havent had any problems. Though my voltmeter varies from in the middle to sometimes all the way to the battery on the gauge. I often worry that it'll blow my battery. When It first started doing it, I changed the alternator and put in a high output alt. It was good for about a week then back to the fluctuation. If you figure something definately share. Good luck!
