A member who works at one of the plants was saying something about paint problems at the plant. Not sure if it was color specific. He highlighted the usual areas of concern. I will see if I can find the thread. Good luck with it though. Its covered by GM, right?

EDIT: Here is the post. http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/index.php?...st&p=453132

Not sure, he might be referring specifically black. Hope this helps.

After 1700 miles on my 07' NBS, I'm seeing chipping and flaking on the front bumper already (more than my last vehichle at 19K miles). The chip I'll attribute to a rock but the spots that are flaking clearly show layers of black paint, almost as if had been sprayed at some point.

Anyone else having paint issues?

its because of poor design if you look at the bumper ends they are covered with that plastic stuff and that absorbs the shock from the road debris however the bumper in the middle section is just painted metal you would think that GM would know better . I had to make an appointment with the regional manager after hearing about the paint and all the other BS thats wrong with my truck he is just buying it back from me and replacing it with a 2008 model whitch has been on order for about 3 weeks now and they still cant give me a price on how much the new truck will cost or when they will even build it so they froze my milage at 4500 and told me not to worry about it right now it has about 12000 and the bumper really looks terrible it has at least 350 to 400 spots on it I wish I could post pics on this site but I cant get it to work

I just bought a '07 new body Z71 and as of now with only 1200 miles on it, I already have 4 chips in the front bumper and it has never been off of a highway yet or around any road construction. My girlfriend also has a '07 Tahoe with 45,000 miles and it is doing the same thing but alot worse. Mine is white and hers is black if that helps with the color issues.

guess Im glad I went with a chrome bumper 07 GMC SLE2, my last vehical was a 02 tahoe Z71 with the black painted bumpers, I didnt have any real issues with it just a few tiny bubbles of rust , but hell Im in NY with all the salt they can throw at you.

its the LTZ model that has the problem the front bumper is painted the same color as the truck in my case victory Red I have never been off road either or on a gravel road . The bumper is just to close to the ground to be painted metal. The only way I know to fix is to mabe cover it with the 3m film

my 02 z71 bumper was close to the ground but I think it had a urethane skin over the steel bumper. when they paint that stuff they put an additive in the paint for flex

I think the 3m stuff is the way to go, I wished I did that instead of the GM painted bug guard. my lip between the bumper and the grill is painted but is the urethane plastic and has flex additive inm the paint. Im at 2300 miles mostly highway and no chips in that, I did however get a really tiny nick in the front of the hood which prompted me to get the bug shield.

my 07 Classic was chipping like crazy on the leading edge of the hood.

Had to install a hood deflector to stop it.

Every little thing would make a chip.

too freaking thin!!

Take it back to the dealer. the bumpers are pre painted when they arrive at the plant. We have nothing to do with them, same goes for ANY painted plastic peice on the truck, we only paint the body "metal" in plant everyhting else is shipped to us from various feeder plants.

I dont see you having too many problems getting it fixed from the dealer.

Absolutely, 3M film is the way to control these problems. Have owned commercial buses with painted front nose caps (which chip like mad). This is why many buses have stainless steel front skins. 3M film is the way the bus industry controls the chipping problem on painted fronts. It's not a perfect fix but will control the problem and keep the chipping to a minimum. Keep in mind these films are available both in clear and solid colors. If your truck is basic black, white, or red they probably have a soild color with a close match that will cover the chips in the process.

roger,

do you have any links to where i can buy the 3M film?

just bought a '07 NBS 1500 in black............would like to get a jump on it, and after having a bad experience with bug guards and flapping windshield trim in the past, the BG is a no go, but the film sounds like the perfect solution.

thx

Ebay is a good place to get it if you want to apply it yourself.

The stuff is called "Invisible bra" and made by 3M. It is sold by several on line truck/auto suppliers or

it can be found at most auto body supply shops. It is sold by the roll to DIY or in a pre cut kit.

The kits contain the hood piece, and corners for the fender bottom edges etc.................

Great stuff ! Check you new 07 closely ..There are a couple pieces on the fender edges from the factory!
