Gmt-900 Test Drive

went to the dealer today and got to test drive a nbs gmc ecsb 4x4 w/5.3. almost fully loaded with sunroof and dual zone climate control. very impressed with everything from lack of noise, power, fit and finish, steering, brakes, even the 4 speed trans. i thought the speedo numbers could have been bigger for quick glancing and the bose audio system and dual zone had too many small buttons. good vision through all glass and mirrors, seats made me feel higher then my 2000. if i had the money id buy one tomorrow more plain jane.

I'm with you!

I've driven the 900 tahoes and 'burbs for rentals for work  They were both awesome. I'm afraid to climb in a truck. I just paid off my 00 Z71 and don't want another payment for a while.... it's so tempting though....

I just drove one yesterday too, same set up, man that thing was smooth, comfortable, and quick. I don't know where people get off saying they don't have enough power. seems to me like they have plenty for a half ton. Just get it reprogrammed and it'll be a runner.

Doesn't make sense to me either. I think my 00 Z71 hauls some ass for a truck and I think the 5.3 is rated at 290 or 295 hp for a 2000.... and it's now up to around 320.... that's a good bit of extra "oomph."

I don't know how I'm going to handle a 400 hp camaro in a couple years

In 2000, the rating was 285 HP.

Got behind the wheel of a new 900 crew 5.3 Z71 4wd yesterday for a test drive and was loving life.

They're pretty nice aren't they?

If I hadn't bought the TBSS, I'd be driving a 900 right now...I REALLY like them.

Of course they didn't have anything close to the options I'm looking for other than an LTZ, so tease the poor prospective buyer with the top shelf truck, ha. Yeah, it was great and I'm waiting to hear when they'll start orders for the 08's. The dealer said August, but we'll see. I will say that after driving the 900, I got back in my 99 and was impressed with the ride quality for a truck that old with 105k on the clock. Gotta love the Bilsteins and the Revos.

You should be able to order '08s starting in early May. Anticipated production start up for the '08s is June 25.

I also finally drove an '07 Silverado Z71 4x4 (not the 2wd version) crew cab, 5.3l, fairly loaded. They're quite nice. I drove one with 6k miles to get on idea of how they are "broken in." Main complaints...

1. Wind/Road Noise. (quite annoying)

2. Cheap looking plastic panels on the doors

3. Small HVAC control buttons

4. Cloth seats look kinda cheap

5. They get quite expensive with a few options

6. 6-sp Auto tranny not available yet

Otherwise, keeping in mind that I'm very picky, they are still very nice trucks. May get one some day when they get all the little issues are worked out and finally offer the 6 speed tranny.

The ones I've driven were quiet as a tomb on the highway. A little disconcerting.

Now...You want to hear wind noise, take a ride in my SS. It's like somebody stuck a leafblower in a blond's ear. WWWWSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHH...Right next to my head. VERY annoying.

Now they are putting that 6 speed in the 1/2 tons for 08, correct? The dealer didn't know anything about that when I asked them to confirm it.

I've actually been driving an '07 TB SS this week. There is also a bit of wind noise, but it's not too bad. Of course I'm probably paying more attention to my speedo than the wind noise. Think some of these trucks just have some bad seals as it was on my '06 Denali. They actually had to reseal the windshield because it was making so much noise. That helped a LOT. Turned out there was a big gap towards the bottom that I couldn't see.

I sure hope the '08 1500's get the 6pd. I drove an '07 2500HD, 6sp (Heavy Duty version), 6.0l. Very nice trucks. Extra gears sure do help, just felt like it needed more power with such a heavy truck, like... a 6.6l duramax diesel perhaps? Didn't get a chance to test drive one of the new duramax's though... But I gotta say, the manual up/down shift button on the column shifter is definately handy.
