what would be your choice? Your a single guy who is just out of college and looking for a new truck. You want a 2500HD 4X4 Duramax/ZF 6-speed, and it has to be a long bed. Would you choose a Regular cab or an Extended cab?

My Dad thinks I should go with the extended cab as it might be nice to throw stuff in the rear seat. He also said if I plan to keep the truck for a long time, the extended cab may come in handy later on when I have a family.

I would choose a regular cab because I think the extended cab would be too long for off road use, and the regular cab has more payload and trailering capacity. I also like the idea of saving a couple thousand on the regular cab to use for accesories such as some real tires, extra gauges, and maybe some power upgrades or an exhaust brake. So what do you guys think?

Get an Extended cab. You'll wonder how you would ever live without it is you do. Regular cab is just too small, you really appriciate having a place to put stuff, and extra people.

i'd go with the ext cab, i want one.. but i already own my GMC free and clear and its badass so i stick with it.

I'd get the ext. cab. Unless you have no friends and you don't like being around your family. LOL

There was something I was going to say about Girls and Back Seats, but not gonna say it.

Get a 3500 Dmax/6-speed reg. cab. They look awesome with the dooleys and the reg. cab. The dually rear end goes real well with the bulged hood. Just my opinion.

BTW, forget about your friends, make them drive too. Otherwise you end up like me, driving everyone around.

Extended cab

We have always had regular cab pickups, got along fine.  Then last fall got a good deal on the truck seen below and went for it.  Much, much nicer.  Handles the trailer much better than the regular cabs did, rides nicer, seems like it even goes through mud and snow a lot better.  I don't know how serious you off-road, but I doubt you will be taking a truck like that into areas where the length will hurt you.  And to tell you the truth, I haven't been able to find much of a difference in turning radius between the two.  Only problem is that it is harder to hitch up to the gooseneck since we put a toolbox in the front of the bed.  If given a choice, go extended.

Now you have me jealous, hope I am able to do something like you when I graduate. :)

If you buy the regular cab you will probably end up wishing you had bought the extended cab within a couple of years.

Everyone needs a dry place to keep things from time to time and you may need more room for these items than the regular cab can offer.

True, but they do make bed covers and caps.

I'd pick the ext. cab, not for people though. I would not like to have my back window right at my head  if I get rear ended, or have my back broke IF the load shifts and penatrate the cab.

Yeah, I know that might sound exagerated, but it could happen.

Kansas Kid , Everybody has differet needs. That is why the manufacturers give us so many options.Personally i would opt for the ext cab and an longbox.I feel it isn't too long to off-road.All you have to do is plan your moves around obsticles in a new manner. As far as Breakover angles you will also loose some. But hey at best everything you drive has one compensation or another, can't be excellent at every thing. You will also have to ask yourself how much time is spent on-road vs. off-road. My new crew has a #### of a ride,it will probably never leave the hot top,but in a snow storm it sure is nice to know that the front axel can keep you from getting stuck. Good luck!

That happened to me in my '91 regular cab.  Got rear ended while sitting still.  Me and my nephew's head broke the back glass.

After owning both types, I like having the extended cab alot.  I'm the only person in my truck probably 90% of the time, but when me and the family go somewhere, it sure is nice to have the extra room.  My 7 year old loves having the whole back seat to himself.  I have the buckets up front, but my wife wishes we had the bench seat.  That didn't matter to me either way.  I had my '91 regular cab for 2 years before my son was born, but within a year or two I was wishing I was wishing i had an extended cab.  I really like my '99, but i still wish i had my '91 also.  It was a great truck.

I had a reg cab for 15 years till I got my new one and I absolutely love having the room inside to carry cargo and people. I don't expect I will ever go back to a reg cab truck.

The sight lines are different but it doesn't take long to get used to that.

I love my REGULAR cab, My wife, my son and I fit in it just fine. As far as the comment about regular cab is OK if you don't want to be around friends and family. Remember that!!! It is a blessing that my friends and family no longer impose on me to take them EVERYWHERE like they did when we had a minivan!!!! As soon as my son turns 16 and gets his license I'm trading the wife's car in on a two seater sports car!!!!! Let them buy their own cars!!!!!

Regular cab lighter, turns better, fits in a parking space and costs less.

Extended cab has more room (than most 4 door compact cars)

To me it just wasn't worth five thousand dollars to have a back seat.

If I had the extra 5K I would use it to buy a good dirt bike to haul around in the back of my new truck.

I'm really leaning towards the regular cab right now.  I just don't think the extra cab space would be missed, because I'm not used to it now.  Plus like was said above, I don't want to be driving all my friends and family around.   ;)

I should have plenty of time to decide, as I probably won't order one until the 2003 model year, or maybe later depending on how much time I spend at college.  Plus the gives them extra time to work on the Duramax, and getting two-tone paint.  I really want to Charcoal Gray/Pewter two-tone.

Won't be loosing the manual transmission though, ask Jpshostr why....
