Keyless Remote

I bough a 2004 1500 and it only came with one keyless remote. I asked the dealer what it would cost for a replacement and they told me $45 for the remote and then $45 to program it! I fould this website http://www.keylessremotesforless.com/GM-Truck-SUV-2003UP.htm that has the remotes for $34.95. The site goes on to say that they are easy to program yourself and that instructions are included to do this. Has anyone had any evey bough a repacement remote and programed it yourself and how easy is it/ what does it all entail. I'm new to being a Chevy owner so I'm still trying to lean all the fine points.

P.S Great Forums lots of information!!!!

One place to look is Ebay. Remotes are easy to find. I believe that some of the sellers also include the programming instructions. The cost by the dealer is high.

Found this on programyourremote.com:

1. Close all vehicle doors.

2. Insert the key into the ignition.

3. Hold down the power UNLOCK button on the driver’s door panel-continue to hold down until instructed

to release in step 9.

4. Perform steps 5 through 8 in fairly rapid succession.

5. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (as far as you can go without starting the engine).

6. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

7. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

8. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

9. Release the power unlock button on the door panel. The vehicle will lock and unlock the doors automatically.

10. Hold down the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter simultaneously until the door locks and unlocks.

This step may take up to 30 seconds.

11. Repeat step 10 NOW for each additional transmitter (including any existing transmitters).

12. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position in order to exit the transmitter programming mode.

I bought a new remote from ebay for $22 for my '04 Suburban. Programming the remote(s) really was that simple. No use paying the dealer that kind of cash.

Thanks, I I have found a number of remotes that come with instructions, I just didn't know what it involved. And like I though the $45 to program for the dealer was bull. I mean even if the shop charges a $100 an hour this would take say 10 mins (for even rounding) the cost to program should only be $16. Thanks for the info, I will be shopping e-bay now for my second remote.

I bought my 99 a few months ago used and it wasnt until a couple days ago that my friend pointed out that since I have power locks and the "security" system I should have remote entry... low and behold I called the dealer and they checked my VIN and I do have the option, but they wanted to charge me $160 CAD for the remote plus labor....

Would this type of remote programming work for adding the remote start feature?

My 2007 NBS LT1 supposedly came with a "Remote Vehicle Starter System Prep Package," but I don't know exactly what that means.

If I bought new remotes that include the "start" button, would I be able to program that functionality myself?

Thanks for any help.

I'm pretty sure the prep package has all the while to the various parts run to the spot where the put the remote start module, so that if you get the remote starter installed you save alot of money in labor because they dont have to do all that wire running. So unfortunatly, no you don't just have to buy a new remote.

Probably more hassle for them than it's worth. Although I am continually amused with the way that different things are programmed on my truck. Not unlike the spells cast in fantasy stories about wizards and such. The b*tch is the Homelink though.
