New Tires

Sometime in the next few months I’m going to be needing new tires. My current Bridgestone Duelers are almost bald, and there’s no way I’m going to make it through winter, or may be not even to winter. Anyway, I’m looking for something that performs well on the road, but also performs well off road and in some mud. I feel like I need either an agressige all terrain tire, or a mild mud tire, but I don’t want to kill my gas mileage. I’ve heard good things about the BFG’s, but I kind of want to go with something a little more unique. I'm leaning towards the Mickey Thompson's. Any help would be greatly appreciated, because I’m starting to go nuts trying to decide on what to get. Those are my 5 main options, in the order I was thinking. I’m open to other suggestions if anyone has any. Thanks.

They are Cooper Zeon LTZ, I have had a set of 275/60/20's for the past month. Haven't been off road with them but in all other situations they are handling just fine. Even my wife gave me her approval of how much better the truck handled after she drove it the other day.

The tires you're looking at will kill your gas mileage due to agressive tread design.

 

The BFG AKO's are rock throwers and will tear up the underpanels of your truck and they're noisy. But, a good set of mudflaps will help keep the paint chips down a bit. Don't know about the other brands.

 

Suggest looking at the Bridgestone A/T Dueler Revo. I just put them on my truck (P26570R17) and like them alot. They're quite, haven't killed my mileage, and I was slinging Texas Red Clay-Mud north of Abilene Friday evening all over the place after some wild thunderstorms on deer lease.

While I do agree that the BFG A/T's are good, I had the 285/70/16's on my old 2000 GMC. They ride nice, handle well, great traction in all conditions, wear great, etc, etc. I will never buy them ever again. Why? Because they throw rocks!!! Whenever I entered a highway or other paved road after leaving a gravel road or boat ramp, it sounded like someone was shooting a .22 at me. I realize this is due to the very aggressive tread pattern, which is what some people want. But personally, I will opt for a less aggressive tread to save my undercarriage and boat from rock damage.

My vote goes to the BFG A/T's. I really didn't notice that much rock flinging, and I live on a gravel road. But I also had mudflaps too. I think if a rock chip is a reason for not buying a tire, then no tire will work because they will all provide at least one rock chip.

If I may... have you looked at the Nitto Terra Grapplers? I had them (until recently) 325/60/18s on my Suburban and they were great. They wore awesome. I had over three years on them and probably could have went another six months at least. I had purchased a replacement set (same tires, Nitto Terras) online around xmas last year and they sat in the garage as I tried to squeeze a couple of months out of the current ones. Well, it was more than a couple of months and the only reason I replaced them was because of a upcoming week long trip. Ended up not using the Suburb' on the trip due to a fuel pump issue. ...then planned on selling the Suburb' so I found a set of 2007 OEM take offs, to put on the truck. I can honestly say that the terra were not that much louder than the stock. ...and that's considering I went from 325s to the stock 255s.

I also had mudflaps....REAL ones, the large, rectangular rubber ones which require their own brackets (in the rear) and large rubber ones in the front. I still ended up with a nice sized chip in the Gelcoat on the front of the V-hull of my boat. I even had the fender flares too.

 

They are terrible for throwing rocks, my brother had them and he said the same thing. Nice tires, as long as you don't mind rocks being thrown.

I did look at the Nitto's, but I've heard bad things about their longevity. I've heard a couple of people say they got less than 30,000 out of them, and I can't really afford to buy new tires every year and a half.

Theres nothing I cant stand more on a 4x4 truck than wimpy stock tires. I've been shopping around for some tires for my new truck, I've just about decided on the Hankook DynaPro MT RT03. I've researched them quite a bit. I've read reviews and tests of them, and everyone seems to love them. ALOT of the guys on the TRD FJ Cruiser forums are running them now, and I haven't heard one single complaint from any of them. Thats the only place I've found where quite a few people have experiance with them, I think they're a relatively new tire. But so far I've heard awesome things, and they're hard to beat for the price too!

BFG AT's are noisy?? I had them on my truck for years (right after stock ones went) and never noticed any additional noise. The tires were great. Im running the Mickey thompson MTZs now and you want to talk about noise, these things are LOUD.

 

I'd stay away from a mud terrain tire if you are looking for something that isnt too loud. A good aggressive AT tire is probably best all around. I'll probably go with the mickey thompson ATZ's or maybe another set of the BFG ATs after my current tires are done. These MTZs are just too hardcore for my occasional offroad use.

I hope you have better luck with the Hankook's than my brother. He has Hankook DynaPro AT's on his F-150 and they are wearing funny and squeal like crazy when it is hot.

I am going to get the Firestone Destination A/T's soon. From all the reviews I have read, this tire is near the top of the list. Anyone heard anything different? As far as the BFG A/T's, I have several friends that really like them and won't put anything else on their trucks.
