My transmission is on its death bed. It's slipping pretty bad in 4th and overheats regularly. The fluid has a nice burnt smell to it.

I just met with Ammco Transmissions down the street and they quoted me about $1450 to overhaul the 4L60 with what he called a "soft rebuild" meaning all the parts that are made to wear. Also it includes a Transgo shiftkit and lifetime upkeep as well as a 36,000 warranty.

What you guys think? $1450 sound about right?

Soft rebuild? Sounds like a cheapo deal to me. Either it is rebuilt or it is just repaired. I don't know if they have changed, but I recall lots of lawsuits filed against them for not doing what they contracted for. I would go to a independent shop.

Do not use Ammco...a bunch of crooks and questionable business practices. Find an independent shop.

Ditto........everyone i've known who took their vehicles in for tranny work ended up having more work done.......ended up paying more than if they'd just bought a whole new tranny.

haha why don't you guys tell me what you really think? lol jk

Interesting. I think I may do some research.

Thanks fellas. Anyone in the Houston area have any recommendations?

there is a dealer on ebay that parts out brand new engines and transmissions. I believe he sells a new take out 4l60e for less than a grand. just do a search for it.

I would not take my truck to Ammco. I remember seeing a dude out at their League City shop wearing a placard saying ammco screwed him on a transmission rebuild and he was out $2800.

Not worth dumping $1500-2500 into a 14 model year old truck with 215,000 miles, sorry. Part the truck out or sell it to a scapper and get something else.

I don't think its fair to just say scrap it. Maybe it is in good shape otherwise. Also it may have sentimental value to him. If everyone followed the its old scrap it logic then we would not still have the classics we have today. ( I am by no means calling a 1994 v6 silvy a classic) but the point is still valid. If he wants something new more power to him, but just because something is new and shiny does not make it better.

Agreed. My tranny might be close to rebuild time as well with 132K on the clock, but I'm almost done paying it off and I plan to keep this vehicle a long time. With a near perfect body it wouldn't make sense to trade it in on something that might be a lemon when this has had relatively few problems. Some of us don't want truck payments our whole life.

Chalk me up to keeping it too. If you just want a truck to haul stuff around and beat around hunting and fishing, you don't need a brand new $50K truck. The only reason I got a 2003 was I had to trade in my car on it and they wouldn't take it for anything older than 03. I liked the 00-02 models. And I also didn't want to spend more than 20K on a truck. I use it as a truck and couldn't justify spending anymore than that.
