Homelink/ Garage Door Unit Problems

When I bought my 06 Sierra CC it did not come with the homelink unit. I really wanted it so I bought one off ebay and it seems to be wired differently than the non-homelink consoul.

 

When I open the door the illumination lights turn on on the homelink buttons but NOT the map lights. I turn the head lights on and nothing comes on. The homelink unit operates just fine but the map lights will not come on when I open the door. They will turn on if I push the black button, so I know they are not burned out. Do I need to switch the wires around?

 

Anyone else with this problem?

I recently did the same...

 

The new console had a 5 pin connection if I remember correctly. The factory harness will plug into the 3 pins side and the colors should match. The plug still has 2 wires, an orange and a white. These are the homelink wires. I ran 2 new wires under the headliner for these 2 connections. I used a vampire tap and tapped the white wire. I connected the other side to a constant power source in the fuse panel. That wire powers the homelink. You need to have a constant power source, because if you don't, after 10 minutes, the homelink won't work. I originally hooked it to another source and it required me to turn on the map lights before pressing the homelink buttons because the way the circuit draws power. Kinda like the radio will still work for 10 mins after you shut the truck off. I cut the orange wire off the 5 plug harness (still connected to the Homelink side) and spliced it with my second wire. That second wire was run to my brake controller's illumination circuit. The factory trailer harness has a cable labeled illumination so I just vampire tapped that. If you don't have the trailering package, I'm sure someone here can tell you what pin to connect to. Mine has worked flawlessly since the install.

Sounds similar to the problem I am having. I need to turn on a map light to get it charged and working after a while. However there is only three wires that go to this unit not five. So I am a little lost with that.

Has this issue been resolved? I bought the homelink console as well for my '05 CCSB and find myself in a similar situation with the lights. I also have a problem with the homelink. When I press any button on the homelink the homelink light quickly flashes once. If I press any other button no light flash unless I wait at least 15 seconds. I tried holding down the two outer buttons to reset the device for up to 20 seconds at which the homelink light should light solid.

 

Using the black wire for ground I metered the three wires going into the homelink and get +12v for orange (with no key in the ignition), +12 v white (after the key is turned to the ON position). I looked at my buddy's '03 Escalade with the factory homelink and the light stays on solid on any of the buttons which is normal.

 

Is there a troubleshooting procedure for the homelink unit or additional re/wiring required? I tried the homelink with the key in and out with no positive results. I also have two units so i cannot rule both units being bad. It doesn't look complicated at all from the wires alone.

Update to my mini-project -

 

I order to get the map lights to work I noticed in my previous overhead there is a three wire switch and only a two wire on the homelink overhead version. The easiest way to retain the previous lighting setup was to swap the entire guts of the lights and switches between the two casings. Then I chopped off the homelink harness and grafted it on to the original wires. Of the three wires from the cab's wire harness - orange, black and grey. I connected the grey wire (illumination wire) to the fsecond white wire of the homelink; the black wire (ground) to the third wire of the homelink; and for power I just piggybacked off the grey. Even though the Orange wire said 12volts it wouldn't energize the homelink device. This setup is good too so in case you leave your doors open in the middle of the night if someone gets in they'll have a harder time of trying to open your garage door without you knowing.
