Front Diff Vent Tube Leaking

Recommended Posts

I have a 2005 4X4 2500HD. My front diff is leaking out of the vent tube. I have not serviced it recently nor have I driven unusually. Coincidently, my fuel quantity indicator stopped working the same day me front diff started leaking. Any ideas??

Not sure if you mean its leaking out of the vent tube or the cap that goes into the front diff. If your front diff is like the one on my 02 the last time I changed the fluid I removed the vent cap, which is what the vent tube is attached to, and cleaned around the area (make sure to not get any crap into the diff) I wanted to put a new vent in but the dealer didn't have any in stock so after making sure it was clean I applied some black RTV around the threads and put it back in. Make sure you don't over tighten it, I believe its made out of plastic.

If the tube itself is leaking, inspect it for a hole. Double check the fluid level as the vent is quite a bit higher than the fill opening so it would be difficult to have fluid come out of the vent as far as I can tell. You may need to replace the tubing.

Oh and its in a bugger of a spot if you are laying on your back in your garage.

I was once told the fuel gauge sending unit is in the tank, I have no idea if this is true or not, check with your local chev service center, on an '05 I would think both of your issues are under warr???
