Check Engine Light

Help,

The battery on my 03 Silverado 1500 was killed today when my daughter was parked and listening to the radio. I went and jumped it, after it started the check engne light was on. When I got home I disconnected the battery for a few minutes think it would clear the light, well it is still on. I will have to get a new battery (4 1/2 years old so its time) but how do I clear the check engine light?

Please help, I would hate to take to a mech if I don't need too.

Thanks

Tech reset otherwise it will take something like 100 start cycles to automatically clear it.

Are you saying to have a technician reset?

So it may reset with a new fresh battery? Will it reset immediatly or will it take some driving?

Thanks

If you have an autozone near you, take it there. They'll scan it free and tell you what the code(s) are that have been set. They can also clear the code(s) to turn the light out, but if the problem that caused the code to set hasn't been fixed they'll just come back in a little while. After you get the code(s) post them on here and someone should be able to help figure out what is wrong.

I agree with bowtiedude, thats the only real way. Plus its always nice to know what set the light, might be something stupid, or something that your daughter did and figured you wouldn't know about/ find out about.
