O7 Classic Cc Tow Rating

Looking at a 21' travel trailer and I cannot find the max tow rating for my 07 Classic crew cab, 4.8, 323 gears, Z85. It is not in the manual and have had no luck finding it on the internet. Anyone have any idea? I have the receiver hitch but not the tranny cooler, which I plan to add.

I had to go back to the 05 archives to find any tow ratings for the 4.8L and then they only had it for the 4.10 rear axle - that rating was 8000lbs. I would derate this by at least 20% which makes your tow rating about 6000 lbs. Remember to subtract any passengers and load in the bed from this. Most 21' TTs should be well under 6000lbs and as long as you take it easy you should be alright. You might consider a Hybred to reduce weight or something like a TrailManor or a HiLo to reduce frontal area.

That is the same configuration with my truck, max you will be able to pull is 6500, that is it with the 3.23 gears....

According to GM's website, a 2008 1500 Crew Cab with 4.8L and 3.23 gears has a MAX TOWING capacity of 4,600 lbs.

If you had 3.73's then you could tow 6,600 lbs.

Goto www.chevrolet.com, select SILVERADO, STANDARD & OPTIONAL, SPECIFICATIONS, TRAILERING.

The towing capacities have been roughly the same ever since the body style change in 1999.

Just put 4.10's in it, then you can tow 7,400 lbs..

A note on Trailmanor vs Hi-LO:

Both are pretty expensive, but Trailmanor is a lot lighter for a given length. HI-LO essentially weighs as much as a regular travel trailer of similar length.

if that is the case, then I better stop towing the two cars around since this is in excess of 4,600 lbs. I do find this hard to believe since I A) have a Class 4 hitch B) when towing both cars (old volvos), my truck did not really have a problem (filled that sucker with 93 octane fuel) C) it never really squatted as bad as other trucks with 1 car on a trailer............I plan to finish up the mods that will allow better towing under these conditions.

Using premium fuel in this case is the best thing you can do to increase the towing power without doing any mods.

so the inevitable question becomes, should I completely swap the 3.23s for the 4.10s?

As I posted in the other thread, a cheap way to reduce your gearing is to use lower profile tires. If you use lower profile tires so that their circumference is roughly 10% less than the original tires, you will accomplish the same thing as changing the gears from 3.23 to 3.42. If the circumference is 20% less, then you will essentially have 3.73 gearing. It works, except that there is a practical limit how low profile you want to go with a truck tire. And you will have to adjust the speedo readout.

I plan to go straight to P265/65R17 size tires when I finish cooking the crappy ameritrac general tires. That may be sound advise but I have to decide if I want to start messing with the computer vs just mechanical parts (I love working on the mechanicals vs programming/flashing computers, too much of a risk). I think I will regear the truck, redo the entire exhaust, change servos, add a complete shift kit, aftermarket trans cooler, and start using 93 octane full time and as a last resort/option, put a custom tune to see what kind of power difference this will make. Hey rich, if you are reading this thread, what part numbers will I need for regearing this from GM (plan to go straight to 4.10s).

Why would you do all that (except tranny cooler) if you are having no problems towing your cars? From what I can tell from looking at all the tow ratings with 4.8 and 323 the tow rating should be at least 5800 lbs

The primary reason is to ensure that I am not burning up my transmission and I am not straining the truck to its max, yes my truck does not really struggle that much, but when i think about it, I really dont tow on any hills or anything else, really just flat surface highways. The longest distance I towed those cars was to San Antonio (about 75 miles or so)..........I dont have a temp gauge to verify temps (yet)........that is really the reason I have not towed those cars as much as I wanted to, truck is still in warranty and I am waiting for it to run out of warranty before making all of these modifications.....I guess personal preference......
