Silverado 2500 Truck Cap

I have been looking at truck caps from some different manufacturers for my '07 Classic 2500 Crew Cab 4x4 in Blue Granite Metallic.

I have been eyeing the Snugtop Super Sport and the Leer 100XL. I have heard both good and bad, but let me break it down.

Snugtop Super Sport is $1845 + $50 for a front tilt window to make it easier to clean the truck's rear window. This includes a carpeted headliner and installation. Total = $1895 + Tax

Leer 100XL is $1420 + $98 for the tilt window and then $85 for a value package of clothes hanger and carpeted headliner and installation is included. There is also a $70 coupon on the Leer website. Total = $1533 + Tax.

Now there isn't much difference in the aesthetic look of either, but a few minor details.

Anyone have anything good or bad to say about either company, quality, look or preference???

My dad has always ran Leer's on all his trucks, and so has everyone in my family (all of us drive Chevy's) They seem to hold up great, my dad only runs his in hunting season, but my truck had a leer on it for 5 years, and it held up great. I sold it because I don't the looks of them, but there was not a single thing wrong with it after 5 years of never comming off the truck. Never had any experience with Snugtop, but I don't have a single bad thing to say about Leer.

By the way, I love that color you got your truck in. My dad is planning on buying his next truck in Blue Granite. That is one sharp looking truck!

The main reason why I am actually getting it is for hunting season. I have 2 hunting dogs that I prefer to be in kennels or a dog box in the bed versus gthe back seat. I wouldn't take it off during the summer at all. If I need to haul something I have a 6'X12' utility trailer that I can use.

I did some quick research today and the Snugtop has a lifetime paint and structural warranty versus the Leer that has one from 1-5 years.

I am surprised that no one else has an opinion or any insight into truck toppers.

I went with Leer 100XL with the remote lock, headliner, and removable front window. I like the way it fits on my NBS truck. The remote lock works with the locks on the truck so I really never have to worry about locking the canopy - but I do carry the key just in case. I have not had to use the front window - the fit is so good that the rear window of the truck is still clean - at least on the outside. The inside suffers from nose prints. This is my first Leer - my previous canopies have been made by small local cos. My dealer also had Snug Top - a similar model was about 300.00 more. The biggest difference was the Snug Top had its own remote fob and actually opened the door as well as lock and unlock, it also had a slightly better gutter design on the rear door - which is my only complant with the Leer - if the door is up, water runs off the back edge and into the bed of the truck so now that the rain is here I have to watch how I load things into the bed.

BTW I have the Blue Granite color and love it - the canopy is a perfect match.

I have the Leer 100xl on my truck and I like it alot!!! Just make sure you add 12V lighting to your list of options... My last truck I forgot to mention that to the dealer and the interior lights in the cap were powered by "C" batteries!

Yeah, we take a lot of hunting trips to Canada and the dogs don't like to sit under the tonneau cover that long. The only reason my dad only leaves it on as long as he has to is because it takes his economy down 1 or 2 mpgs. I was suprised when I heard about the remote lock and open of the new caps. I also like the idea of the removable rear window. My truck's rear window is permenantly stained from having the cap on it so long. I'm not trying to steal the threat, but if anyone has a tip on how to get those stains out I would really appriciate it, haha.

Well, I ordered the Leer 100XL today. I ordered it with the carpeted headliner and clothes hanger (didn't really need the clothes hanger, but it came in a value package that was together), 12V dome light, removable front picture window and the remote unlock. There was a $70 coupon online, so all in all it was $1677 + tax. The Snugtop was about $300 more and didn't come with the remote unlock. It should be here in 3-4 weeks. Something that really sold me was the Lifetime warranty on the paint and structure.

I appreciate all of the feedback.

Wingnut has my 01 Silverado. The Leer 100XQ on it is about 4 years old and as nice now as it was new. (partially thanks to Wing for taking such good care of it)

I think your gonna be a happy camper with your new shell.

You should be happy with your cap, i have a 06 2500hd crewcab with a 100xl and am

happy with it, I have the flip out front window (helps lots with cleaning) and

the carpet headliner. The only problem i had was color match(graystone), it was pretty

light. so much for the fancy paint match system. :smash:

That kinda worries me. I wonder if there is any way that they can re-match it. I know that I will like the look of it. Too bad my wife's new rig trumps my truck...

My Leer in Blue Granite was a perfect match for the truck- they even use the same color code - however I suspect that with time the sun will age the fiberglass differently than the truck.

    • This is exactly the reason our EV has consumed so much of my driving. I don't want to fire up a cold diesel or gas engine just to drive 2 miles up to the store. It's arguably terrible for an engine. If I'm not driving at least 10 miles and don't need to do truck things, the truck stays parked.   Enter the EV. It's immediately heating or cooling the cabin as needed (heat pump). An engine doesn't need to warm up or be driven gently. I can tear off in it with ZERO guilt. Move the car 1/4 mile from store to store and not think "gee, I'm short-cycling a lukewarm engine".   It doesn't idle in a drive-through. Doesn't idle at stop lights. (OK, neither would the diesel, if I let stop-start have its way, but I don't).   Even moving it out of the garage to wash it... HA! It doesn't need to be started just to move 40 feet. I have cars that I will actually put in neutral and push (no start) in/out of the garage or shop if they absolutely HAVE to be moved. My nice Camaros.

    • Great video. I almost want to reserve one now.
    • I traced the atf cooling system in my 1500 and it comes out of the transmission, into the bar/plate liquid/liquid heat exchanger, as stated above.  Then it crosses over to the external thermostat/bypass and then  to the aux cooler in front of the main radiator.  Hence, on this routing, the PPE thermostat bypass eliminator is an $85 piece of bling that does nothing for reducing atf temps on this truck.  I think I'll temporarily clamp a needle nose vise grip on the coolant feed hose to the bar/plate cooler and see how much the atf temp drops.  With the use of ULV trans fluid, I'm not convinced running the trans cooler than OEM spec is going to be detrimental to the life of the transmission.    I found this interesting on the Dana/Long site stating that they make transmission cooling/heating bar plate heat exchangers.  I worked with Dana/Long on a few projects when I was at the gas powered fun factory. https://www.dana.co.jp/downloads/PTG/Long/Dana_TOC_SpecSht.pdf  Bar plate heat exchangers are just a stack of stamped parallel path fluid channels, assembled and vacuum furnace brazed to make the final assembly.  Want more cooling/heating, just stack more plates until you run out of package space.   Anyway, thanks for the info, much appreciated.
    • I have thought an EV might have some practical value in extending the life of the ICE members of ones fleet. Now....I'm convinced of it. I've been letting my better half access Raven (Mitsubishi Mirage) for her needs while Dizzy has been in the shop. Being the fuel freak I am and given the fact Raven is capable of over 60 mpg in clean air on a warm day I was taken back by the wife's ability to take a car that had used a half a tank of gas that to that point had returned a value of 57 mpg and return in with a decimating 51 mpg for that same tank in that same day in a 15 mile round trip of short hop errands and a stop in the drive through at Micky D's.  😱   Trust me on this. It would take the remainder of that tank driven on the highway to return that tank to just 54 mpg. This is not a Mitsubishi issue. This is an ICE issue that is magnified in vehicles capable of such high fuel economy values. On a percentage basis your 1500 does the same thing. Short hopping an ICE consumes a good deal more fuel and in doing so provides zero additional useable outputs. That entire volume of fuel is wasted in diluting the cylinder walls oil films, creating crankcase moisture and acid content and the resultant wear.    Enter the SLATE. All of that is avoided and the ICE's advantage in range and made useful at reduced wear for your ICE!   Kind'a cool.
