Non-matching Color Truck Cap

I've seen a lost of trucks that have non-matching colors on their truck caps. Some look good and some look stupid. I never thought I would do that, but I have the opportunity to buy a 1 year old ARE cap for $400.

 

The cap is painted greystone metallic. My truck is sport red metallic with black nerf bars and black fender flares.

 

Do you guys think this color combination will look okay?

It's hard to say, without seeing it on the truck. I'd be inclined to suggest waiting and getting one that is color-matched to your truck, though. Maybe you'll come across one that's sport red or black, to go with the truck and/or the accessories you've put on it.

 

How far away is it? If it's local and you think it "might" work, go over there, set it on the bed, and see what you think of it. If it works for you, it doesn't matter what any of us say!

if its a good deal, you could purchase it and then take it hand have it painted to match at any number of body shops or truck cap sales places.

It's such a god buy I can't see how you can pass on it if you are wanting a cap.

 

I would take it and have it painted though if it were me. A mismatched cap looks exactly like what it is... one you got a deal on but didn't want to pay to paint. A small shop should be able to paint it without ripping your head off on price.

it sounds like a good deal on the cap pending the repaint cost. If you have a trade school in the area that teaches body work etc... give them a call. You might be able to get the cap repainted as a class project fairly reasonable. I had a quote of $500 from a local body shop to repaint an eight year old tonneau cover, which I though was steep but good body shops charge for their work accordingly. You might be able to get with the manager and work out a weekend or side project reasonably. My recommendation is to price around before you commit to the cap, you might be close to the price of a new one in the matching color.

The only reason I was holding off was because I have been looking for a used one that matches my truck. The only problem is that there are not a lot of used caps for the OBS 1/2-ton crews.

 

The guy said he paid $1,200 for it a year ago. It has slinding windows with sccreens on the sides, a tilt-in front window, and clothes rods as options. He isn't too far away, so I'll see if I can see how it looks and think about getting it painted next year.

Where is this cap located? is it in perfect condition? I have an '06 crew cab in Greystone metallic. I would buy it if it was not too far away.

 

Unfortunately, getting fiberglass cap repainted properly is rather costly. $ 400 and up would not be uncommon.

Ah . . . the colors mentioned compliment each other.

 

Anyone with a cap sticks out or gets known, at least in a small town.

 

ARE caps are supposed to be good.

 

Buy the cap. Don't paint it. And move on.

 

The idea of a vocational or trade school is a good idea. But there is usually a long line of people seeking the same savings. But it is worth a try. Also, some prisons do the same for cheap money. No harm in asking. They too have a waiting list.

 

I used to get all my lawn mowers/weedwackers/snowblowers done at the state prison. But I knew one of the guards who would take in for me. All I paid for was parts. And the work was super.
