Faulty Odometer Reading On 07 Silverado?

Recommended Posts

Hey,

My parents leased my brother an 07 Silverado. Needless to say, he doesnt take care of his vehicles. The tranny went out of it yesterday, although I do not know the exact cause.

Now that his truck in in the shop, it apprears that he has put 61,000 kms on it since getting it last year. The lease has a 60,000 km maximum, and there are 2 years remaining. The dealership says he has 1700 hours on the truck.

When my brother was called on this, he said that when the tranny went, his odometer went crazy and put on all the extra kms. But could that cause extra time on the hour clock IF he is telling the truth?

I call bs - but has anyone ever heard of this happening? Is it even possible?

I don't want to see my parents getting taken advantage of any more, but they seem to be believing this story. Thanks for ANY help on this matter.

It shouldn't be too difficult to figure out the real story. Since your parents leased the vehicle for him, I'll guess they also pay for the gas. You can work backwards from gas purchased over the life of ownership to guess-timate the mileage driven.

Also, with that kind of mileage there should have been some record of oil changes and the mileage when those changes happened.

Also, 13000 hours with 61K km (37K miles) means he's leaving the truck running alot...only moving 2.9 miles per hour the truck is running??? Something doesn't add up here...but I still think your brother is lying.

I hate to say it, but I'm sure your brother is lying.

Well, he is a pro at stealing gas, money, etc etc. He begs them for money, but he never provides recipts for anything he purchases. Also, he has done all the oil changes himself. He went in to get new tires, but they only recorded the last 4 numbers on the odometer.

I am SURE he is lying. I just need to prove it to my parents.

Thanks for the replies.

61,000 miles in a year or so sounds like alot of travelin. And from the sounds of this situtation he must live with mommy and daddy, they might of noticed that he was never around and spending tons of money on fuel. In the end your brother sounds like a con artist and is probably full of sh*t. Sorry kristal

i'm 19 & my parents have nothing to do with my $22,000 truck

but anyways, sounds like hes abusing the hell out of it like racing it, and if hes getting new tires that could possibly mean burnouts and maybe some power shifting.

& i also vote its BS on the odometer adding onto whats on it already :)

Yeah, he is never around. Only there for for food, sleep and money. He's 35, lives with my folks, and is ALWAYS driving around. Yes 61,000 does sound like a lot, but its not possible for the odometer to malfunction like that, is it?

Im not as advanced in the sense vehicles as some of the members here but i have never heard of the odometer malfuctioning at the same time as a trans. and being in milage trouble with a lease. Somthings foul..

I would say no... at least in the US (I assume you're in Canada due to all the km stuff :) ) there is very high scrutiny of the manufacturers to provide tamper resistant ODOs. As this vehicle is of American origins, I would assume the odo electronics on the vehicle are identical, only that it spits out metric miles (kms) rather than US miles.

As a matter of fact, I would say for the lay person it is probably NOT as easy to tamper with an electronic odometer than it is/was to screw around with a mechanical one.

As I am not familiar with how to mess with an odometer, mechanically, or otherwise, someone may throw a tomato at this post and tell me how easy it is... it's possible that it IS easy, and I just don't realize it or know it.

Look in your phone book or on-line and find your town's local speedometer shop/guru. Seems every city/town has at least one.... an independent shop preferably. Call 'em and ask 'em about the believability of your brother's story. I am pretty certain of what their response will be.

Seems like a sad tale.... I guess your parents will have to make a decision sooner or later about continuing to enable his irresponsibility, or putting a size 15 workboot foot print on the back of his front and making him find his own way. Seems like that's what he needs.

I call BS... his explanation is full of it....

(sorry for your/your parents predicament)

Doesn't Onstar provide updates monthly on new vehicles? I would check with them.

to relate to the story - bare with me

there was a recall for the 2003/4 Sierra Instument panel a while back - of which a good friend had his replaced at the dealership ( warrenty ) anyhoo - the original mileage was not initially transferred to the replacement unit - they had to send the replacement IP back to manufacturer to correct milage - even the dealership couldnt alter it

base on that ,, but i doubt he could alter it ..

60,000 KM = 37,280 Miles

Purely bogus, baloney, and total bull squeeze. Somebody is trying to pull a fast one here.

Maybe you should trade in your parents for some with balls.
