Brake Lights Always On, No Right Turn Signal

Here is the link to the thread describing my troubles. My right turn signal has gotten to where it won't blink (but will light up), but the left signal and hazards will work, and I even replaced the relay. Now, my brake lights are staying on all the time and won't go off even with all of the light related fuses pulled. Any ideas? Thanks!

Im thinking the Brake Light Switch

 

the switch is up towards the top of the brake pedel. can be a bit*h to change. I had one break before and was having same issue with brake lights staying on. I believe it was on my 1988 C1500

Well, I checked, and it was popping right back out once I released the brake like it should. :lol:

That's what I'm thinking but really hoping it's not... :thumbs: Aren't those around $250 or so?

These are the exterior light schematics for 98K bodies. The only reason I post these is to illustrate you have a complex system. 5 of 10 techs would have a hard time even reading this. When I see an electrical question I first go from experience I might have had with the particular problem. Then check bullitens then the diagrams to see if I can make an educated guess or walk the poster through something easy. This isn't the case on your truck thats probably why your not getting any responses. Check to make sure you don't have a problem with the trailer connector if you have on, it's a problem this time of year. If not you can replace stuff all day long and you might get lucky but the best bet here is to pony up and take it to someone with alot of electrical experience. If you can read the diagrams and you are good with a test light and volt meter my crack at it would be ignore the first issue with the signals and figure out why you have brake lamps on all the time. Work the circuit backwords and you'll probably find something that makes sense for causing both issues. Good luck.

Sheesh I hate electrical stuff. This is the first time I've had to deal with something like this and I've never really tried to read a wiring diagram, so this probably isn't an easy diagram to start with! They'll definitely be of some help, at least if it's something I can't figure out by messing with it long enough and take it to someone with electrical experience. How exactly would the trailer connector have a role in this? I've read a thread in which someone found that their trailer connector caused problems in their brake/turn signal system because it was corroded, so is that what you mean? I have been through mud and such, but looking in the slots it doesn't look corroded (but it's also dark in there :thumbs: ). My next-door neighbor owns a shop, so I guess I'll go to him first if I can't figure it out. Also, does it mean anything that the brake lights started staying on just recently while the turn signal has been getting increasingly worse about blinking when it's on? Thanks again for the wiring diagrams, I think they'll help a ton! :lol:

I had similar problem. It is the trailer connection. The full time hot terminal has corroded and made a circut with the brake terminal. Need a new connector. Temp fix is to pull the #1 maxi fuse that powers the trailer power terminal.
