What Tranny Fluid?

I finally found a tranny shop here in town that DOES NOT believe in simply flushing a transmission. He says it isn't a complete service without dropping the pan & changing the filter.

 

He quoted me $85 for the full service...does that sound reasonable?

 

Also, what fluid do I need to make sure they put back into it? They are a well know shop around here so I should not have to worry about it but better to be safe than sorry!

Also, what is the normal service interval on our trucks?

 

I had a flush done at 50000 & am now at about 97,000, & am hoping that is ok!

I've always tried to do a fluid and filter change every 25,000 miles, but alot of people go 50,000 miles with no problems.

 

The shop should use Dextron III. Synthetic fluid is best if do alot of towing, because it will withstand higher operating temperatures.

I do alot of towing several times a month hauling a bass boat back & forth to the lake.

You can step up to the new Dex VI which is a syn. I would suggest this especially if you are towing like you said.

Any ideas how much more the syn Dexron costs?

I had my first filter and fluid changed last week (95k miles) and paid $75 for my mechanic to do it. I didn't feel like dealing with the close clearance issues removing the pan and the mess since the drain bolts are always frozen so I opted to have it done. I brought the Delco filter kit and Dexron VI separately and paid $4.99/qt at Carquest; it took 5 quarts. There is only one licensed manufacturer for Dexron VI so any brand will be fine.

 

I drove 1000 miles out of town this past weekend and I can say that the full synthetic Dexron VI has made a noticeable improvement to the shifting and smoothness of the tranny. I would definitely go with this fluid especially since it's only a few bucks more than Dexron III.

Dexron VI is the way to go. It is reverse compatible meaning you can put it in older transmission. If you give me your zip code I can get you a total for six qts shipped to your door. A rough estimate if you lived here in NC would be around $57 or so. AMSOIL's ATF is a Dexron VI fluid and 100% synthetic. The advantages to running synthetic especially towing and hauling is keeping your transmission cooler than regular ATF.
