On my 01 Tahoe, it was an additional aluminum plate that mounted behind the plastic one up front. It went all the way to just before the oil filter.

You also get a skid plate under the transfer case.

Look for RPO option code "NZZ" in your glovebox.

I haven't looked. I got skid plate package.

But I always thought the whole point was metal. What's the point of plastic?

I purchased my OEM skid plate package after buying my truck. What you posted in your pick is the plastic engine shield that is mounted right behind the front bumper.

There is also a aluminum skid plate (roughly 24x24 inches) that bolts to the frame below the center/rear of the engine. Then there is also a smaller (approx 10x12 inch ) alumnium plate that bolts directly below teh transfer case.

These are the two skid plates that you get with the z71 packege.

You can find the GM part numbers in a another post of mine made back in DEC/JAN timeframe. Sorry I dont have timet o search for it right now.

The total cost with both plates and GM proprietary bolts was around 90 bucks if i remember right. The bolts were as much as the plates were!

Hope this helps!

Why do you people take all comments so seriously? But there is some logic to that armor remark. A skid plate should be of thick enough metal to protect vulnerable components in a serious off- roading situation. I think what GM equips their Z71 trucks with make believe skid plates - seriously they are way too thin to provide much protection.

And yes, I agree that the engine shield should be metal as well - in fact I had two foreign made 4X4's that had just that - a sturdy metal engine bottom shield.

When I ordered my truck back in 2002, I ordered the skit plated with it. With the scouting camps I go to often, didn't want to take the chance that I'd get on some 'not so good roads'.

Anyways, with that said, the off-road skit plates are metal (or perhaps aluminum). but certainly not plastic.
