Better Fuel Mileage

I usually get about 17.5L/100km on cruise going 130km/hr on the highway, and I cannot get any better than that. City driving is even worse at about 18.5L/100km. So a few days ago I had a new Truxedo cover installed, and I bought a Superchips Flashpaq Programmer. I programmed the truck to the performance tune and I find it pretty good. Nice firm shifts and definitely a difference in power once you start moving. Also even less dropping back on hills. So I came out to a job today, it was about a 600km drive. I set cruise at 130km/hr as always and to my surprise my fuel mileage has gotten alot better. I now averaged 16.5L/100km. So I am guessing both the cover and programmer both had alittle to do with it. Thats just as good as what I was getting in my 5.3L. I am hoping with an intake and exhaust it will even get better!! :tear:

It doesn't surprise me at all that mileage was better. I have a full 150 lb+ fiberglass shell on mine and I saw a slight improvement in highway mileage. Tonneau covers did the same thing on my last truck.

They help!

Not to be a jerk, just curious. But assuming you bought these two items just for mpg gains? What's the payback time? If you bought the cover just for needing a cover, then mpg gains are just a bonus, and could in affect pay for the cover, in time.

Well its like this. I bought the cover because I needed a cover, just sick of all the snow getting in the back. As for the SC Flashpaq I obviously bought it for the power increase. And to be honest I am not worried about fuel mileage, I drive a 6.0L with a 4.10 rearend. On average I am at the pump every 4 days when I am home. When I am on the road working I am probably at the pump 2-3 times in a single day. If I was worried I would of bought a car. I put between 60-70,000k on my truck a year so getting better fuel mileage is a bonus and it will definitely pay for itself.

Believe me, exhaust does NOT give you better mileage. If you like V8 noise like I do, your mileage will get much worse!

How do you like the GM Catback exhaust. I was thinking about it but I can get a better deal on magnaflow over $100 dollars cheaper.

I didn't think you cared much about mpg, that's why I was curious about the first post. But of course if it gets better, then it's all good. Love that dark silver color.

Geez, what do you do? If that was me I get about, 330 miles to a tank of gas. So that would mean I was driving at least 660 miles or 990 miles in one day. If it were all highway at 70 miles per hour, that means 9.5-14 hours a day driving. How do you have time to do any 'work' once you get there?

Unless your job is the driving, like a hot shot driver, taxi, etc...

All you folks that live in the great frozen north also have to remember that

we get the winter blend gas that also gives us the benefits of faster/easier

cold starts AND LOWER mpgs !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I work in the oil patch. So I do alot of driving to get to the rig. Could be anywhere in Alberta, BC or Sask. I have drove as little as 100km to work and as much as 1800km one way to work.

I went from Fernie to Calgary last Sunday, and was doing 12.5L/100km on Highway 22 on average, at 120-130. And I have 4.10 gears! I don't know why - I have the Corsa exhaust and a K&N77 intake, and a Superchips handheld, and burn premium gas. I have double and triple checked but the mileage is just that good. I wonder why your 5.3 wasn't similar?

WOW..that is good I never knew a truck could get such good gas mileage. Mileage like that sounds like a 6cyl...Don't get me wrong I did get good mileage with my 5.3L, but I never seen anything better than 15.8L/100km. Im also never light on the pedal. With my 6.0L I am always topping out passing people, and I always walk on it at the lights...Maybe that has something to do with my bad fuel mileage...lol
