Question I Have Been Pondering...

I know I have some beefy off road tires but I do have a question to ask you fellas concerning my G80. It was raining here yesterday and I punched the gas after the traffic light turned green and my tires started to spin but I heard what sounded like the rear diff locking (you know the clunking sound it makes). Is this something normal? I have read where some folks mention the G80 locks under certain RPMs so I was wondering if that was a normal thing. I know after all my crap happened (another post and too long to mention here), both me and the mechanic looked at the ring and pinion and all looked perfect, not a scatch, but I just had that nagging question in the back of my mind about the locking and the sound it makes. I really don't want to go through breaking all my $H!T again! :D

Thanks,

My understanding is that if either side spins more than 100 RPM faster than the other at speeds under 20 MPH, it will lock. I've noticed it starting off in patchy sand and the sound is there on both my '95 and the '07.

You are correct.

Yeah the G80 makes some awful noises out back. They use a gear system to engage. The Ford 9" (sorry for swearing) uses a clutch system, much quieter and more reliable system.

Clutch systems wear out faster. Therfore need to be rebuilt more often and are not as positive engagement. IMHO.
