Trailer Brakes Not Working

I have a 2008 GMC Sierra SLT 4X4 Dually

With the ITBC System

 

When hooking up to an older trailer the brake system does not function at all

 

But when hooking up to a newer trailer the system works

 

[The older trailer works my 2006 Dually but the truck doesnt have the ITBC system]

 

Does anyone have any information to help me

I would not see why the ITBC would be any different from a third-party brake controller on an '06... But check your wiring going to the trailer, especially if you are using a 7-6 way converter. Sometimes the aux and brake pins are swapped. If this were the case, however, the trailer brakes should lock when you hookup the electrical connector. I presume you did not have the newer trailer with your '06? I would definitely check the pins, they may be swapped.

 

Either way, let us know how the ITBC performs. I am curious if it is a true proportial controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy.

The ITBC is a true proportional controller like the BrakeSmart, directly linked to the trucks master cylinder. The Prodigy is not.

I know that when I hooked my utility trailer (no brakes) the IBC suggested that I service my trailer brakes. Then with my TT (full brakes) attached it tells me that the trailer is connected. SO somehow it knows that something is plugged into the rear socket and if the brakes are connected or not.

Well the Prodigy supposedly has a sensor that detects the change in inertia. I have one on my 1500 and it works great, especially on the hills. However, I really wish Chevy and other manufactures would integrate the brake controller on all models, even their SUVs. I suppose the cost must be high for the option?

 

Thanks for the info on the ITBC. It really makes me want one if I trade my truck in here in a few years for something with some more power. I haven't heard anyone talk about it so I have been curious how it works, how it displays error messages, etc.

Yes, it does. The sensor is called an "accelerometer", and works as you describe, but that is not true proportional braking.

 

True proportional braking is tied directly to the tow-vehicle braking system, knows how hard you are trying to stop, and immediately applies a proportional amount of braking to the trailer brakes.

 

The Prodigy "feels" braking efford "second hand" which has a couple of weaknesses. One is that there is some delay (the deceleration has to first be felt). Another is in poor traction conditions --- if your tow vehicle is sliding on ice for example, the Prodigy will not "feel" deceleration and consequently not be applying the brake presure you'd like.

I hooked my older trailer up to a 2008 Ford f350 "Super BAG" and the system worked ???

 

how do you explain that !!!!!!!!!!!!

 

All I want to do is pull my boat to the lake, my 4wheelers to the races and my drag car to the strip !!!!

Do you still have the '06 dully? If so, check the pinouts on the trailer wiring cover and compare them to your new '08 and make sure they are the same. If you don't have it I can go look at my '06 1500 that came factory with the heavy duty trailering package. Should be the same pinout.

Hmm, I suspected the wiring would be the same, but it's the only thing I can think of. I wonder if something in the brake system could be causing the ITBC to malfunction on the old trailer. Do you get any error codes with it, or does it act like the trailer is not connected?
