Date: April 2, 2008

Subject: Coolant System Class Action Lawsuit Settlement

To: All General Motors Dealers (excluding Saturn, SAAB

and Isuzu)

Attention: Service Manager

Recently, an agreement was reached to settle multiple class action lawsuits pending around the country relating to a variety of cooling system related issues.

This includes the performance of silicon bead/nylon carrier intake manifold gaskets in certain 1995 through 2004 model year 3.1, 3.4 and 3.8 liter engines; alleged deficiencies in the performance of DexCool coolant in those same engines; coolant leaks in 2000 through 2004 model year 3.8 liter engines (RPO L36); and "DexCool sludging" (i.e. coolant system clogging) in 2000 through 2004 model year S-Utilities and pickup trucks.

Given the large size of the vehicle population involved, there will undoubtedly be a substantial amount of interest.

Any customer inquiries should be referred to the official web site for settlement administration at... http://www.dexcoolsettlement.com/.

Inquiring customers can also be referred to the toll free telephone number for the Claims Administrator at 1-866-245-4291.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

This sludging issue only affects 3.1-3.8 vehicles?

No,The sludging issue was on the 4.3-V6s in the S-Trucks.

The 3.1-3.4-3.8 V6s had leak issues (Major leak issues!)

Do any full size trucks come with these engines?

Thats funny, My daughter has a 97 Grand Prix w/3.8L an about 200000 mi with only a water pump change still has most hoses and NO leaks. Wife has a 2004 Monti Carlo SS Supercharged 3.8L with no leaks and everything but the Dex cool is original. I have four GMT800 EXT cab pickups with one over 245000 mi with no leaks just coolant changes every 3-4 years.

It really has nothing to do with Dexcool its self. Its the type of gasket material used in these select v-6s that let the Dexcool eat through them. GM has redesigned these gaskets to try and fix the problem.

All the people complain that the GMT400,GMT800 trucks are having problems with so called no good Dex cool and its not the problem its the gaskets. But proper maintance is very important.

Awesome! Thanks!

I had a Grand Prix (2002) that had internal leaks (head gasket). I never knew why it happened, but it cost me about $800 to fix. I'm glad I will be able to get some of that cash back. My girlfriend had a Malibu, and that thing had to be repaired twice because of coolant going into the oil. I'll have her file a claim as well. I always wondered by the gasket had blown on my Grand Prix, as I always took good care of the car. Thanks for the info.
