Operation Of Front Differential (limited Slip, Locking)

I have a 2002 6L 1500 GMC Sierra. Only when in 4x4 mode (4-Hi and 4-Low) I get a bucking or dragging feeling when making tight turns. How does the front differential operate in these modes (limited slip, locked, other)? It is quite significant even in moderate turns so I'm sure there is something wrong. Your guidance? I've changed all the fluids first to rule that out.

your feeling the driveline binding. 4x4 shouldn't be used on dry roads or anywhere you can get good traction as it will cause this binding your feeling.

Yup, a little binding is normal, you'll especially feel it if you've engaged 4wd on a dry road.

 

To answer you're question, the stock front differential operates as an open differential when in 4wd mode (i.e. only one of the front wheels will spin). If you've got the G80 option you've got an automatic locker in the rear end, giving you "three wheel" drive.

Thanks Guys. I had believed that my transfer case had a differential and so I was focused on the front differential as the cause of the problem but thanks to your input I checked closer and sure enough my model doesn't have the differential transfer case.
