Finally, An Intelligent Distinction Between Suv And Pickup...

I get really tired of hearing about gas guzzling "pickups and SUVs" and how destructive they are to the environment and causing high gas prices, etc. I tend to agree that probably 98% of Tahoe, Suburban, Expedition, Explorer, Durango, Escalade, etc owners do not need such a large vehicle to haul their little brats to and fro from soccer games and ballet class. Most of these idiots would suffice just fine with a smaller, lighter, more efficient minivan or crossover. But why lump pickup owners in with these irresponsible SUV drivers? Trucks are used for actual work, work that keeps this country going.

Finally found a media source that thankfully draws a distinction between pickups and SUVs...

Pickups' future brighter?

While some full-size pickups get the same dismal fuel mileage as large SUVs, a school of analysts believe the pickup segment will hang on.

"Pickup trucks tend to generate consumer loyalty, especially the American-made pickups," noted Len Brewster, a Detroit-based auto industry analyst. "The super-duty pickups are going to continue to struggle, but I think the entry Ford F-150s, Chevy Silverados and Dodge Rams will ultimately be more resistant to market changes even as gas prices keep going up. Pickup trucks are relied on to do heavy work in some of the big markets like Texas and California."

Wow, Mr. High & Mighty truck owner, you forgot to insult all the posers with 4x4 too. Oh wait, you have the Z71 package on your truck, so you must use it every day for your work, along with your bed. Right? And I'm sure there's no way you could get your job done with a smaller truck either, right? You must have a full-size because the Canyon is too small for all your work needs?

What gives you the right to complain about people and their vehicle choices? If somebody wants to drive a truck, SUV, Prius, Hummer, big rig, etc. - it's none of your business. If they can aford to take the gas hit, then good for them. And just because you're surrounded by 98% "idiots" who drive SUVs that you think don't need them, doesn't mean that they don't. Some people buy them for their safety, some for their convenience & versatility, some for their comfort, and some for their looks. Just because you think they could get by with something smaller and more efficient, doesn't make it so. I could easily argue that most people don't need a car at all. Look around on your way to and from work. 99% of cars have 1 person in them. Should they all be driving mopeds that get 100 mpg?

How about using a little common sense and think about what you're saying before you make yourself look like an idiot again.

I am just talking about all these soccer moms driving around in SUVs that could easily get by with a front drive mini van is all, don't get all bent out of shape, geesh. Just thought it was nice to read someone actually drawing a distinction between a truck and an SUV for once, since all it ever seems like you hear about in the media is "pickups and SUVs".

Why, exactly, are these people idiots?

:D

I guess I'm an idiot too, since my truck isn't always loaded down to the bumpstops.

+1 Add me to the "idiot" club. (shut-up BJD3, Daddy, AlaskaLTZ...etc)

I guess iam an idiot since my wife calls me that all the time but anyway its amazing that todays vehicles are called gas guzzlers cause they get 20 mpg but back in the 70s and 80s you were lucky to get 15 mpg out of a vehicle thanks to the tree huggers for today problems. But its ok for a tree hugger to jump into a major fuel burning jet plane to fly to there next protest about the environment. People buy what they want and like why is that a problem? Iam sure you have stuff that you really dont need but bought it cause you like it. It would be a very boring world if everyone was like you.

Well, I guess my family lumps into "Idiots" too. When we were looking for a vehicle for the wife, we wanted one that would accomodate two kids (3 and 1), two 70lb. dogs and everything that is needed for whatever reason and besides its our right to choose which vehicle we drive.

It's called being a red blooded American...(or Canadian, don't want to offend our brothers up north) and buying whatever you please. I am a firm believer in "size matters", if there's an idiot tailgating me, I'll be more than happy to stand on my brakes and wait for my 2" ball to go through their radiator. Even if I didn't have a practical use for my truck, I would still have it...just because I want it. :D

Hornet: looks like you really stirred up the hornet's nest with your first post. :D

Well, after reading it a few hours later, I can see it wasn't worded very well, so I can see why the nest is stirred. Sorry everyone. My point is, and admittedly I didn't make it very well, is that I think trucks are going to survive the high gas prices whereas full size SUV's are probably going to be getting pretty rare in the coming years. I wanted to pass the article along to see what others thought, but my wording ended up offending lots of suv drivers thereby shifting focus from the article.

So let me try to word it better and see if this helps:

Do you all think that with the probably permanent rise in gas prices, that families will shift back to car based modes of transport, like the station wagons of the 60's and 70's and minivans of the 80's to early 90's?

Yep, add me to the list of idiots on the forum. I have no kids, don't tow anything, and could definately get by with something more "practical." I had always wanted an 800 series YD since they first came out. So when things worked out, I got one!

Does it mean I'll buy another full-size SUV when it's time to replace this one? Who knows! I tend to go more with personal preferences than what I "need." That's what separates your average consumer from truck (or car) enthusiasts such as ourselves. :D
