K & N Oil Filters

My wife has a 07 Tahoe and the filter was a pain to get to with the many differnt oil filter wrenche collection I have. So I bought the K & N filter which just uses a regular wrench to take it off with. I have a 07 Sierra I just purchased which I am thinking of using the same filter due to the ease of removing the filter. Any imput would be great. I imagine the set up is the same with the Tahoe and the Sierra of accessing the filter?

Put one on the 98 and it didn't help. I couldn't get a wrench to stay on the end of it. Plus my oil pressure went way down with the K&N so I never put one on again. I use the slippery Wix filters and got them off easier.

use one on my 2000 (OBS) and never a problem...been using them on the C5 and the GTO too...great filter...ranks up with the Mobil 1...I never had issues with my oil pressure either (a reason I stopped using the UPF44 Delco Gold)

I use them on my 2007 Sierra and 2007 Tahoe. They filter way better than most except for the Amsoil Absolute Efficiency filters. I personally have not seen any oil pressure drop with these. Cold PSI around 50, hot around 40 all the time.

The filters are in the same place, in that half moon cutout at the back of the oil pan. Now if they would have just moved the skid plate forward about an inch so that the oil did not run off the filter and onto the skid plate.....

not a big fan of the K&N oil filters...other tests have shown they dont filter as well as others believe it or not and 13 bucks for an oil filter is crazy!!! Napa Gold aka. WIX does more than ok and is a 1\4 the price

i put one on my last oil change. Ive heard great things about them, so the extra $$ didnt seem like much... Besides I use royal purple , so whats a couple more dollars when you change your oil twice a year...

Have to disagree with you on this one. I've seen several tests, including cutting apart oil filters my self, that shows that K&N Oil filters are one of the best. K&N, Mobile One, & Wix have more filtering pleats than the rest of the industry. Interesting enough, FRAM has the least amount of filtering media and poorly designed to boot.

Just because there heavier and beefier as you say doesnt mean a thing, its the filtration thats important. I wouldnt use K&N filters on anything not even my lawn mower, AC Delco is the best in oil and air filters and before anybody screams "weres the proof" its out there but I just cant find it.

I wasn't saying they were cheap, it just didn't work for my 98 350. It was a hot running sum byatch anyway. It could thin out 10w40 easily. I gave it a try I just didn't get it to work for that truck up in that tight space.

On another note has anyone tried the AFE D2 filters, they are supposed to be like the K&Ns but be "better" than them? I kinda wonder how one would stack up against a K&N.

ive been using a Mobil 1 filter for the past 3 oil changes its the most expensive filter around here

i think it says on the box (filters 99.6%, other brands only filter like 96.7%)

There are so many variables to consider when considering an oil filter.

Quantity of media

Quality of media

Multipass efficeincy not one pass efficiency

Internal construcion quality like solid metal ends

Bypass valves and anti-drainback valves where needed

etc etc

And please remember, any filter company can produce a super efficient filter that will stop 99.9% of all dirt but the filter has to flow as well. There is a fine line they have to walk in producing a filter that will remove the dirt and still allow the oil to flow as it should. It is also more important that it filter and flow well 2 months and 3,000 miles after it was installed, than when it is first installed..

All the oil filter studies I have seen put K&N in the top three in terms of filtration abilities, quality of materials, etc. I have not ever heard of ONE bonafide problem that was attributed to a K&N oil filter. They are made by Champion Labs, the same people that make Mobil 1 filters and a few others. For you guys saying that they don't filter very well please provide a link to the study that says so. Your uncle's cousin whose motor blew up due to him using a K&N filter doesn't count

I've always used the Mobil 1 filters along with Mobile 1 oil and change at about 5k miles (when the DIC change oil warning comes on). I've found it best to use a strap style wrench to get the filter loose. I have a set of 2...one big and one smaller, both with rubber straps that I slid up around the filter then draw it snug in the wrench then turn...works great.

...oh, I also second the idea of the skid plate being about 1" too long and right under the filter....lol. I usually set a couple wadded up paper towels on it to catch the drips
