Seriousness

What would everyone prefer, a forum with a heavy dose of joking, and quite a bit of question answering (basically what we have now), or a forum where questions are answered, and little to no joking occurs. These are two extremes, but I think you get my point.

Yes, this is a serious question. I can't change what anyone else does, but I can adjust my posting habits to ones that are more in line with the overall goal of this forum.

A forum is for education and knowledge as well as entertainment. I receive both on this forum and one without the other is a place I would not and will not be.

the one thing I can not stand is people who take themselves too seriously and have no sense of humor. I don't see much of that around here. you're always going to have your select few however.

this site has a great bunch of guys who are helpful and entertaining.

While I enjoy the BS, I think lately it's gotten out of hand. I know I've contributed to it, but I think we need to keep the BS in BS threads, not threadjack constantly. It seems as if the site is starting to get a bad rap for not having any serious, knowledgeable members, which isn't the case.

F*cking around is fun, but we need to be more careful of where it happens, since I've noticed we've driven several people away recently. Just my 2 cents.

Dan, do you have examples of people being driven away?

Off hand, no, but there are some older members (older in time spent here, not age  ) that have left the site due to the increase in BSing (among other reasons), and I think there was a new guy in the last couple of days that got pissed because we jacked his thread.

This site has changed a lot in the last year. I love a funny comment here or there, but to often one joke is made and then 3 or 4 guys go off on another tangent keeping the joke going, or making all new jokes unrelated to the topic at hand.

+1

The BS and fuggin' around doesn't bother me, but the threadjacking does. I HATE seeing a serious topic turn into fifteen pages of stupid nonsense. Stay on topic or take your bullshit somewhere else.

There's an ebb and flow to it. Every site goes through it from time to time, especially one this big.

It is getting out of hand (in my opinion) lately, and I'm not going to point fingers because I'm hardly without sin in this area myself.

IMO the off topic section is were anything goes. If the OP wants his thread to go whichever direction so be it. Thread jacking does get old... Then again this site has been more interesting in the last few months. idk. It was surprising to see Jeff in an actual debate in the piston slap thread. Just kidding we've all been in it.

^^ I've thread jacked too, but try to put in something due to the original thread topic.

Off topic doesn't mean that people have free reign to do as they please. There's more leeway, but there are threads for talking about nothing. Personally, I'd prefer that all the mindless back-and-forth that a lot of us are a little too quick to participate in be kept in those threads. A couple of off-the-point posts is fine, and is usually taken without people getting too upset...But taking somebody's thread and turning it into 4 pages of "hahahlolOMGWTF BBW!!!ONE!lolCAT! IT'S CATURDAY!" really needs to be cut back on.

I'll have to agree with the majority on this one, but, if this forum was all seriousness, I probably wouldn't visit. As far as the thread jacking goes, I'd say 60% of us , if not more are guilty of it.

Yeah, nothing wrong with having some fun along with the informative posts as long as there is some order. This site would be fairly boring if everybody was seriouse all the time. Personally, I can only take so many "which exhaust to get" and "does this look good" posts before you've gotta make it interesting. And there are plenty of forums that really do nothing but screw around as well as those super strict "information only" sites (which don't seem to last long these days). I think we've got a realtively good balance compared to the ones I visit.

Well, most of the time. :chevy:

I agree 100%, way too many threads are getting derailed. Not to sound like a jerk, but those threads should be cleaned up. With all the useless banter the thread becomes very hard to read.

Suggestion---Wingnut is damn good Moderator, but maybe he needs some help, especially in the Fullsize Truck and SUV section. 1-2 more Moderators would really help out. Zembonez would make an excellent moderator. I believe VMax2007 (Jeff) would as well.
