Results From Silverado Track Day

Here's some information from track day. I just uploaded a couple pretty weak videos from my digicam to youtube and they should be posted soon. Check out some of the pics below.

 

 

I know most people won't read this whole post so I'll summarize: I beat the 4-cl Acura EL. I was 4 seconds off the pace of most vehicles including the V8 & V6 mustangs, the celica, the 350Z and the Corolla. If I would have had better brakes I could have been close to beating them all. The suspension is definately up to the task and I was only held back by the tires and my brakes. Surprisingly I was very happy with the stock Eagle LS2's though. Once you heat them up they have great dry traction. The other cars could have pulled better times with better drivers.

 

 

I've attached a quick graph that I made for our lap times. Also, I was watching my fuel mileage intensely during the day. From driving hard on the track, I was getting roughly 53.3 L/100km once I started getting confident with the track layout and was putting the hammer down a lot. If you convert that to US mpg, that's roughly 4.41 mpg or 5 times worse than driving at 90 km/h on the highway. I've looked into a big brake kit for my truck and it would be more than 3 grand to upgrade to 14" rotors and 4 piston callipers from stainless steel brake corp. I think it's smarter to just buy a car. I think if I did have that kit I could shave at least 4 seconds off my times because I was getting RIDICULOUS fade during my timed laps which resulted in them burning my pads. My tire pressure monitor came on during my hotlaps saying, "warning, tire pressure critical". My fronts were at 50 psi they were so hot (started with 40 psi on all corners).

 

I didn't put too much detail in the graph so I'll try to explain here:

 

The RX8's 2 slowest laps were with David in the passenger seat. The RX8's fastest was him by himself on the track. The RX8 owner was about 4 seconds slower around the track than the RX8 driven by the instructor. The cavalier was very fast and handled well but it melted a power steering line before we could do a timed lap. The RX7 had issues and didn't make it to the track. The Mustangs (V6 and V8) turned basically identical times. The drivers really don't know what they're doing though and were all over the track. Both of Christina's timed laps in the 350Z convertible were with Bryan in the passenger seat; she did well for a 19 year old girl. Jordan kept getting slower as he kept doing more laps in the Celica. His slowest lap recorded was because I think he went wide in a couple turns. The last lap I did with the Autodrome guy in the RX8 was roughly 1:18. During the lap he said to me, "man, I could really get used to driving this car". The RX8 really handled well and you could almost mat the throttle through the corners. The Corolla XRS was driven by by buddy's dad and he's absolutely nuts. He went off the track almost every lap. We're all surprised he didn't break anything.

 

My slowest lap was in 2wd as I kept powersliding out of the corners and couldn't put the power down. My fastest lap was with AWD on which helped me to power out of the corners with the throttle pinned. To get some perspective on the speed of the track, there is a long sweeper that takes you onto the long straightaway. I could exit this sweeper with AWD on at about 110 kmph drifting all 4-wheels to the outer apron. I ended up topping out at about 140 kmph on the straight. I could have probably hit 150 kmph but would have definately killed by brakes then.

 

After the lapping session the driving instructor said to me, "that thing performed extremely well for a stock truck, I've never seen just a regular truck on this track. Usually we get SRT-10's and F150 Lightenings but never just a regular truck. You were really hanging with the cars out there!"

 

The biggest surprise was Bryan in the RX8 commenting afterwards that, "dude, you were pulling away from me on the straights! I never knew trucks were that fast!"

 

Other comments by the other guys to me were:

"WOW, that thing sure is flat through the corners!"

"That thing sounds MEAN on the straight away!"

"You're crazy!"

"How heavy is that thing?"

Overall it was such a great time and I do not regret it one bit. I probably shaved about 10,000 km off of the tires but don't care because it was definatlely worth it.

Haha thats amazing! With a tune, intake, exhaust, better brakes and tires that time would have been awesome! I can't believe how well your truck did!

Wow, that's really freaking cool. I hope I get to do that someday, just not with the tires I have now. :D

 

By the way, I love the front end of your truck. :thumbs:

Excellent post, I knew the rx-8 would be hard to beat. Those things love to be in the 7k-9k rpm range.

That's pretty cool stuff! Those brakes were a LITTLE warm! :nono: A track day in a Silverado makes about as much sense as autocrossing a school bus but this proves it doesn't have to make sense to be a total blast!

 

I bet that was tons of fun! Thanks for the update. :idiot:

    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.  
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
    • you might read through the info on gmupfitter.com for your truck, to find a good power source.
    • Melling I believe is/was the OEM on the lifters who explored this problem some years ago. The white paper they generated on the topic indicated two items of note when I read it. 1.) They only fail on the switch. Prevent the switch, prevent the failure. 2.) The majority fail due to deposits messing up the timing of that switch. Anyway that's what I got from it.    Mine have always been active, 195K+ now, and my oil maintenance is surgically clean.    Of course this assumes good parts. That is no heat treat issue or machining flaws. I get comfortable that these issues are in the rearview mirror by about 30K. IMHO naturally. 
    • Yes, the key seems to be with the half tons that if it has the Z71, then it definitely has the two speed. What got me was that the two speed AND the lower geared towing package option could not be chosen together the last few years unless it was mated up to the 6.2. Want the 3.0 duramax and 3.73 tow gears ... nope, can't get the two speed transfer case ( neighbor son realized that after he had bought his used 3.0 half ton .. where the frick is the low range ? ! ).    I am still unsure which truck series, the half ton or the HD truck that the original poster is referring to for sure other than yes his question is in the HD section of this forum but that doesn't guarantee the question got asked in the right section.
