Gauge Cluster Lighting

This may be a stupid question but is the lighting in the gauge cluster supposed to light up during the day? On my '07 Silverado, I'm pretty sure the gauges didn't light up until the headlights and rest of the lights turned on. I have noticed on my '08 Sierra that the gauge lights are on during the day regardless if my headlights are on or not. Just wondering if that is normal?

Yes, they do light up all the time. I notice that if I go thur a tunnel or something like that they light up brighter under low light conditions.

I remember now, there is a 'tsb' on this. More of a dealership memo that was released on the Service Center of Dealerworld. Some of these trucks were built without the 'always on' dash, some were. Sorry

Important: "GM of Canada" dealers require prior District Service Manager approval in order to replace the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) in vehicles without daytime backlit IPCs for the purpose of customer satisfaction.

 

The purpose of this bulletin is to inform dealership personnel that they may encounter new 2008 trucks with or without daytime backlighting of the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). Some early production vehicles may have an IPC without daytime backlighting. A production change was made and all later production vehicles will have an IPC with daytime backlighting. This production change may result in the dealership having a mixture of vehicles in their inventory, some with and others without IPC daytime backlighting. The vehicles with non daytime backlit IPCs are good saleable units that meet all requirements. The IPCs should not be replaced in vehicles without daytime backlit IPCs unless there is a significant customer dissatisfaction with the IPC visibility.

I think the dash lights are on all the time. Hard to tell in daylight.

 

Build date around November, 2007.

Thanks for the info M.CUEVA....appreciate it! It looks like that is normal so I'm happy with it. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a bad sensor or something like you mentioned. My light control does not allow me to turn the lights all the way. It is difficult to turn my light knob to the "off" position and when I do get it in that position, it bounces back to the "auto" position. Not a huge deal in my eyes but I'll plan to have the dealer take a look at it when I get some free time. I wasn't sure if that had anything to do with the dash lights being on or not but it appears they are unrelated in my situation.

 

Yeah mine has a build date of November '07 as well.
