hey all,

i just got a 2006 gmc sierra 1500 crew cab z-71, with a 5.3 v-8. it can run on e-85 fuel. around here (if you can find it) its about 50 cents cheeper. i herd you use it up faster than regular gas. is this true? and do you have to be on empty to fill up with e-85, or can you mix it? thanks.......ed

I've seen people experience anywhere between a 12% - 20% drop in mileage. It depends on driving condition, driving habits, etc. You can mix it with gas as much as you want as it already has a 15% gas content (e85 means 85% ethanol, 15% gasoline). All it will do is become a lower concetration of ethanol.

 

If you want it for cost savings, you're probably not going to notice any. Around here it is about 15% cheaper than gas but I've noticed about a 15% drop in gas mileage which eliminates anything that I saved over gas.

 

The thing I do like about ethanol is that it does a really good job of cleaning out your engine (it breaks up carbon deposits quite nicely) and it burns about 300% cleaner than gas. It is also about 105 octane. Now I just want enough e85 stations available that I can build a car with a 13:1 motor to run soley on e85. Now that would make it worth any drop in gas mileage!

Congratulations on your purchase Ed!

Yes, you'll use more gallons of E85 than you will gas. But since it's less money, the best way to compare the 2 is cost per mile. Here's the math.....

cost of fuel / MPG = cost per mile.

figure out both gas and E85, then compare the cost per mile.

 

I recommend running a few tanks of E85 and a few tanks of gas through to get you MPG for each type. This takes into account your driving habits and gives you real numbers to work with. The "general" information you hear and read about for "everybody" in the US, is just that, general information. It's your money, be specific! :cheers:

 

You don't have to be empty to fill up with either E85 or gas. The PCM will adjust accordingly. But I have read that some people don't see a difference in the MGP read out until they burn a few tanks of mix (that's switching in either direction). So if and when you can, and if you care, waiting until the tank is low might be better. And I stress might. It's not going to damage anything with your truck.

  • TURN THE KEY OFF
  • USE MORE THAN 3 GALLONS
  • DRIVE 7 MILES OR MORE

I've been running E85 constantly since April. I got the truck in March, and did some experimenting. I lose 2-3 mpg both on the interstate and in the city. So you're talking going from 14 to 11 in the city. (A lot of stop and go :( ) But in the Des Moines metro, if you're careful, you can get E85 for 80 cents to almost a dollar cheaper sometimes. :dunno:

My 2007 Suburban can run E-85 but one of the main reasons I don't run E85 is because I have never seen an E85 gas station and another reason is because I heard that your fuel economy goes down, so I would rather run 87 octane gas and get better mileage even if it is more expensive.

My 02 Suburban is a Flex Fuel. I have used E85 as it is over 1.00 cheaper than regular Petro. I average between 12.88 and 13.91 miles per gallon using mixed highway and city driving. I typically get about 220 and the highest was above 280 miles before I choose to fill up using about 16-high 19 gallons. I could use the whole tank full and see how many miles I could get out of a 30 gallon tank but I dont fell like filling up 30 plus gallons with E85 that cost $3.159.

I have crunched the numbers many times.

 

Run your numbers.

 

Assume a 20% decrement in fuel economy with E85 over gas. (If you have the actual numbers for your vehicle, it will turn out a little different, of course)

 

Determine your miles driven per year/month, whatever interval makes sense for you.

 

If your truck gets 15mpg on gas, assume it will get 12mpg on E85 (this is due to the substancially lower heating value of E85).

 

Now you can caluclate your cost per mile, assuming you know the cost of both a gallon of gas and a gallon of E85.

 

If I recall, the E85 cost has to be SUBSTANCIALLY lower than that of gasoline to, even, come out on par.

 

Example:

 

15mpg gas, 12 mpg E85

 

If gasoline costs $4 per gallon, E85 must cost $3.20 per gallon to break even, less to actually incur any savings at all.

 

If gasoline costs $4 per gallon, and E85 costs $3 per gallon, you save $166.67 per 10,000 miles driven.

 

 

If gasoline costs $4 per gallon, and E85 costs $3.50 per gallon, E85 costs you $250 MORE per 10,000 miles driven.

 

Throw it in excel and crunch it. Depends on what you can get gas and E85 for in your neighborhood/city.

    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...

    • I started my install this weekend. Everything was pretty straight forward but I ran into one issue with running power through the firewall. The nipple grommet on my High Country already has a small harness running through it - has anyone else ran into this issue? And on the engine bay side, does the wire basically just penetrate the factory wiring boot? I did this on my '22 Trail Boss and it seems much easier but thats been a few years. My other thought would be possibly drilling a new hole adding a rubber grommet just to the lower left of the factory hole. Thoughts?   Has anyone used a T-harness off the Bose amp and obtained power from there? It seems a little odd that such a small amp needs 3 power leads

I buy all teh filters for  our three vehicles once or twice a year. Have always run NAPA Gold on everything I own....I buy it thru my Son's account for his business-which he has a Heavy Equipment repair shop-one reason he uses NAPA so much-they have such a full line of coverage for just about anything/anywhere- He gets s  good discount because of volume bought.
