Service Stability Dic After Replacing Steering Shaft And Steering Gear

I replaced by steering gearbox and intermediate steering shaft on my '05 Yukon Denali XL. I brought it to a local mechanic to get it replaced. I got the vehicle back yesterday and my "Service Stability" indicator on the dash was on. The mechanic said that he was going to look into it. He called me and said that because the vehicle was on the lift, i have to drive it for about 75 miles for it to stop appearing as the air ride is reseting. The weird thing is that I don't hear the air ride system kicking in when I start the truck - i usually hear it kick on. Does anyone know what it can be?

Your mechanic is a ...... ok I'll be nice wrong. Was the light not on before the repairs?

Tell me about it. That's why I'm doing my research and really do appreciate everyone's feedback.

The Service Stability DIC came on, only after the repair was done. In addition, some of my bulbs on the steering wheel control (radio seek button) are not working. The button functions but the bulb seems to be burnt out. Dont know if its possible to short it out when removing the steering column and trying to put it back.

Anyway, I called him this morning and asked whether he even did a code scan. He told me that he did but did not pick up any error codes. He told me to drop it off tomorrow to take a look at it again. I did also tell him that my steering control bulbs burnt out after I got it back from him. Not sure whether I should bring it back to h im.

Suggestions anyone?

If the Service Stability message is on then there is a code in the stability system. The steering collum does not get removed to replace the shaft so I would say that your function bulbs being inoperative is a coincidence.

Unless your dealing with a idiot that has no clue what there doing, I have seen people take stuff off that has nothing to do with what they are working on. :shakehead:

I replaced the pitman arm and had to remove the power steering gearbox. When I drove and made the first turn the Service Stability message came on. I noticed that it turns on in the first turn and when I park the front wheels left or right. I think its a sensor from the steering wheel or maybe the steering column( if there any sensors there). I'm trying to fix it myself if I can. How did you get your denali fixed?

Do you realize this thread is from sept 08?

I already scanned it the fist thing that came out was "Primary Sys Electrical Suspension Control" Diagnostic trouble codes:computer failure or no controller available. "Secondary System Engine/PCM" diagnostic trouble codes: Did not read engine PCM. User action required test manually. "Secondary System Rear Wheel Steer" diagnostic trouble codes: Computer failure or no controller available. I'm just going to try taking it to the dealer hopefully its not a lot of money.

All these DTCs are likely secondary system error codes that usually don't show up (or won't show up correctly) with a normal scan tool. I can't speak for GM but when I was at Hyundai some models required you to set steering wheel "center" after any front end work (even something as simple as an alignment) using the scan tool. If any electrical components were unplugged for this work to be done the truck's control systems may be able to "tell". It might be possible that GMs need to have the steering wheel centered like Hyundai required. Based on how you describe the message appearing, it definitely sounds as though it has something to do with the steering angle sensor or similar component.

Thanks for the info! I scanned it (for the last time) and yep its a sensor. Secondary System Body Control c0472 steering hand-wheel speed sensor circuit low and c0455 steering angle sensor performance. I think I have to take steering wheel off but I'll look at the manual.
