Abs Brake Problem

My abs brakes kick on for no reason when I am going over rough surfaces like through grass or up a trail. I am not on the brakes most of the time i am in the gas alittle bit and I am not going fast, maybe 10 mph. I have cleaned my abs wheel speed sensors and this did not help anything. I can hear the pump running and I put my foot on the brake and it shuts off and then comes back on a few seconds later. I am thinking about replacing the wheel speed sensors. any thoughts???

Subject:Information on the Upcoming Safety Recall 05068 Front Wheel Speed Sensor Corrosion

Models:1999-2002 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe

1999-2002 GMC Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Note: This Information is for United States Dealers only. Canadian Dealers Should See Safety Recall 04094 Dated January 2005

Based on information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) web site, the media may report that General Motors will be announcing a safety recall involving certain 1999-2002 model year Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban and Avalanche and GMC Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles.

These vehicles may experience unwanted antilock brake system (ABS) activation and increased stopping distances during low-speed brake applications (greater than 3.7 mph but less than 10 mph). This condition does not set any ABS codes nor does it illuminate the ABS warning lamp. This condition is more likely to occur in environmentally corrosive areas, based on field report data from the U. S. and Canada. Accordingly, this recall will be launched in the "rust belt" states of Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia only.

To correct this condition, dealers are to remove the wheel speed sensor and thoroughly clean the wheel speed sensor mounting surface on the bearing, apply Zinc-X (rust inhibitor) to the cleaned surface, grease the mounting surface, reinstall the wheel speed sensor, and check the peak-to-peak output voltage to ensure the wheel speed signal is within specifications. These repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.

Approximately 804,000 vehicles are involved. GM is working with its suppliers to obtain the required parts as quickly as possible. Based on the anticipated schedule, we plan to begin notifying customers about this recall in November 2005.

GMVIS information for this recall will not be available until the recall bulletin is released to dealers in November 2005.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Do not attempt any repairs until Campaign 05068 is released.

I took my 99 Sierra to the dealer for the same problem. Picked it up a few hrs later and it was fixed for free.

Wow, exact problem I'm having on my 2006 5.3L 4X4 Silverado POS. One week out of warranty and they said it's my problem. Called GM, same deal. What a joke.

I'm having this problem right now but my 06 Sierra is now 6 years old with almost 70,000 miles. I have not tried to call since I will probably get the same answer you got. I was warned that this would happen to my eventually by my old boss who had 2 K1500s and 03 and 04 and they both did that. Unfortunately it gets worse as it corrodes I guess but that 04 I drove would drift several feet into the intersection when stopping! I got used to it but its stupid they will not fix it since they still have this problem.

The issue with the corrosion under the front WSS is an easy one to diagnose and repair.

Remove the front wheel, disconnect the plug from the wheel speed sensor and put a digital voltmeter on it. Spin the hub by hand, reasonably fast. The output of the WSS should be 350 millivolts, AC (or .350 volts AC). If it is reading low, remove the WSS, plug the hole to keep debris out, and clean the mounting surface down to bare metal. I used a dremel tool, a wire brush will most likely not work. Clean the WSS, and re-install with some grease, or anti-seize covering the bare metal. Check your voltage again.

What I found on my 06 2WD was that replacing the bearings, with one that had a WSS installed in it was going to be cheaper than buying just the WSS. Fortunately, I was able to fix the issue by cleaning it.

My previously owned 2001 Silverado 1500 4x4 hit the road for the first time in June 2001. I purchased it in 8 yrs later in 2009 w 171K km.

Twice now I have issues with the ABS sensors...first the L/F in 2013. Dealer cleaned up the sensor and charged me $155.

Then again in 2014 when I nearly took out a pedestrian in a parking lot...that was with both feet on the pedal! That was the R/F this time and the dealer cleaned up the sensor for $99.95 in labour.

Then I came across the ABS recall #04094 while searching for the current airbag issue.

I just finished talking to a very nice Canadian GM rep regarding the ABS recall. They searched my VIN and according to their records "my recall" was CLOSED in 2005. In layman terms that means the previous owner took the truck in and had work done on the ABS in 2005. Therefore no recall came up at the dealer when I reported the same problem.

So I guess they figured that the clean up job in 2005 was going to last longer than the brand new one off the line! Or they figure their trucks are only good for 10-12 years.

Either way I'm not impressed w GM and not sure my next truck will be one. With all this talk of moving assembly plants to Mexico I would much rather support trucks made in Canada & USA. (If that is even possible.)

Geez. you bought it used at 8 years old and now it is an antique at 14 years . And what? A quarter of a million miles maybe? What do you expect them do do?
