Who All Has A Their Own "truck-fund"?

Anyone have a separate account that your wife or significant-other doesn't know about, or knows about and lets you contribute to it?

That way when I want to purchase an accessory I can take it out of my truck-fund rather than the joint-account with my wife, do you think she'll buy into that? :D

The problem is I would like to a few small purchases, but since she handles the books on our joint-accounts I feel guilty "taking" money from her.

Am I thinking too much into this, does anyone else feel guilty taking money from your joint-account to feed your truck?

Heh...We've been having quite the discussions on this exact topic. She wasn't happy about the expensive-ass headers I bought. Here's how that discussion went down.

Me: "Sweet! I gots me some pimp headers on the way!"

Her: "What? Car parts? How much were they?"

Me: "uh....Like a LOT"

Her: "We didn't discuss it first".

Me: "Why would I discuss it with you? You don't know anything about headers!"

Yeah...She didn't find that NEARLY as funny as I did.

She's still gonna marry me though.

Sucker.

Simple...I handle all of the finances. I know what she spends, she doesn't have a clue what I spend. :D:P

Actually, she probably has an idea, but she doesn't care. As long as I pay the bills and she can buy the things she needs.

My wife is fairly "low-maintenance", unfortunately, the kids aren't. :D

Not married.. But, when I was, we maintained separate checking accounts, in addition to the joint checking... Basically, my check went to my account. Her check went to her account and we'd transfer money into the joint account to pay "our" bills.

I don't think there should be anything "bad" construed with having a "fun money" account for you or her, for that matter. Just sit down and talk to her about it. Setup some guidelines or ground rules you can both live with and go for it.. Maybe she sets up her own "shoe fund" account and she transfer $50 a month to that, when you transfer $50 a month to your "truck fund" account..? :P

I'd suggest at least intending that the accounts are intended for fun purposes, not repairs and things like that.. New tires because you "want" new tires? Fun money. A new tire, because you blew one? Not fun money...

I'm sure you two can figure something out, though! :D

My wife's a Pension Actuarial Analyst... you can see why she's the one that takes care of the money.

My wife is a Payroll Accountant. Taking care of home finances is the LAST thing she wants to do.

I don't blame her.

That's what I said :P

My soon-to-be wife has her masters in finance...I won't be allowed near the shared $$$, and that's fine by me.

All I have to do is spend mine. :D

The wife and I have separate accounts. She is notoriously bad with money. So she pays the day care and 1/2 groceries and I pay all the rest of the bills, fund the investments, maintain the long term financial plans, etc.

But no, I don't have a dedicated account for fun stuff. I have separate savings and investment accounts where funds automatically accrue (automated transfers and interest deposits from my main accounts). So when there is something I want to buy I check to see if there is enough money in either of those.

I hear you guys. My girlfriend is an internal auditor for a bank. She has her BS and MS, both in accounting. :D

We aren't married, and don't have a joint account, but 'share' money for all intents and purposes. She's pretty cool about my Best Buy spending and truck spending and whatnot. I find it's easier to talk about it for a few months and then once you buy it, she's already used to the idea. That's what I did with my Plasma TV and this truck. Worked pretty well. I planted the Corvette seed a year or so back . . .

I have a seperate account for the 65 Impala. I started it back 20 years ago with an alotment to it from my paycheck. It was that savings that I was able to completely go back through the impala this past year and finally get it done. Once I told my wife what it cost she just shook her head and said "so there's your new truck". Which is what she thought the account was for.

We have separate accounts as well. Has been working great since we met. :D

 I'm still laughing at that. :chevy:

+1 but we keep allowances anyway. She gets $100/wk and I take out $75 that can be spent on anything with no questions asked. We talk through the rest of the purchases.

Yes, we too discuss any significant purchases. But she is most always cool with what ever I would like to buy since she knows I rarely buy anything just for myself and what I do buy is for the benefit of the whole family.

    • This is interesting. My quote tagged here is different from my original quote. After I’m driving them longer. That isn’t me. I don’t talk that way. I definitely wouldn’t express myself that way. Interesting.
    • I have the same running boards on my truck and I do agree they are bulky. I also find myself stepping over them when getting in and out of the truck. Besides providing protection to the rocker panels, they aren't very useful.  I will be replacing them soon with the Amp Powersteps.
    • Monthly payment is only part of the equation. With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.
    • 10 Ford and Chevy engines proven to reach 300,000 miles   You may note a common 3K OCI on this list of gas motors. I skipped over the diesels. Dh'O.
    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.
